I do not have anything planned, but on one of the Boards a Canadian poster spoke about a nice rifle he owned but didn't like.

It got me thinking as to whether a United States citizen/resident can buy a rifle from a someone in Canada or sell a rifle to someone in Canada.

Anyone know the drill?

My brother lives in Canada. He inherited some hand guns, and long guns from the US. He had to register the handguns, and then ship them through a broker (Irunguns) I shipped them out of Maryland in the beginning of December, and he received them *yesterday*. It cost 150.00 US per gun, not counting taxes etc.
This whole thing took a long time because we could never get the same answer twice from anyone, the "firearms branch", The RCMP...He has been told he can carry the long guns across, as they are registered to him, and they are not restricted weapons like the hand guns are. However he would have to transit New York state, so he is looking for other alternatives.
I don't know if this was any help. but I DO know it can be done.

To import from Canada to the USA, an FFL has to submit a Form 6 (application & permit for importation of firearms, ammunition and implements of war) to the BATFE).
The FFL does that on your behalf.
They tell you the application takes about 4 to 6 wks, but ??.

The firearm being imported may arrives in the USA before the permit is OK'd. Customs will hold the firearm for 30days.
After the 30days, if the permit is still not issued (or the FFL does not make arrangements to pickup the item at the US Customs holding center,,the item is placed in a US Customs Warehouse facility for up to 2 months. During that time the importer (you) are charged w/storage charges.
After the 2 months if still not claimed and charges paid, the item is sold at auction.

It used to be an individual (non FFL) could apply for a Form 6 under 'occasional importation of a sporting firearm'. I don't know if that is still possible.
I imagine a Canadian Firearms Dealer would be involved at the other end of the transaction.

Check with Customs & Border Protection (CBP) They must have a Q&A or FAQ thing on their web page

If I ever go thru it again, I'll just let someone with an Importers lic handle it!

About 6 months ago I sold a rifle to a fellow in Canada. It was a rare WWII rifle. He lived in Vancover and set it up so that I shipped the rifle to an FFL in Washington state. He did all of the rest. As far as I was concerned, I just shipped the rifle to a FFL dealer in the US.
