Is it possible to grind a square frame J to a round configuration?
I would use round full cover grips on it.

Maybe. The biggest obstacle is the location of the serial number. If you cut into the SN, you have committed a felony.

Pick up a pair of J frame round butt Magna grips and place them on the revolver and trace the outline with a lead pencil. If it interfers with the SN, don't do it!! Also, it will show if the frame cut outs will be cut into.

Sounds like you propose modifying the gun so you can use stocks you have or like. Really a silly idea. Better to inlet the stocks to fit the gun instead of the other way around. Lots of very good reasons to forget it.

The square butt J frame handles very nicely, and it was such a favorite of NYPD detectives that John Jovino Co. had a run made up in stainless, with 2 and 3 inch barrels and square butt, in 38 Special, of course.

My vote: Don't modify. Better to just get a round butt J frame.

Yes, but it's not nearly, or probably ever, going to be worth the trouble. Unless you're into 'project guns'.
