Can anyone really fit 10 rnds?

I have to say that S&W mags are thee most difficult to load of ANY mags I have ever loaded. Absolute finger killers if you don't use a loader which I never did until I got S&W's. They work perfectly, so I can't complain about function, but I'm certainly going to be following Bkreutz's advice and ask S&W to send me the new followers. Nothing to lose with that.

Trim the legs on the followers. The 10th round will fit right in. I don't recommend cutting the spring coils off but that is me. I have seen people have feed issues after they mess with the spring. What causes these issues, not sure, but only change was they cut the springs.

I shoot the 9fs and 9c in competition and have made the simple length adjustment of the follower legs with excellent results on all 14 10 round mags I own. They are plastic, cut them any way you please, I use simple shears, others use a Dremel.

There is a Youtube video on the follower mod, a simple search should bring it up.

Disclaimer: I am not an expert, just my experience with my equipment. YMMV.

Best wishes!!

Thanks to everyone who replied to this forum, I always get great answers here.

I got an extra 10 rd magazine for my M&P 9 because that's all I could find and have the same problem. The mag still functions just fine so I do not want to risk modifying it. Eventually I plan on getting a couple of 17 round mags.

Semi thread hi-jack! Lol

First off. I read at thread about a guy forcing 18 rds into his17 rd mags. So I tried it and I got 18 in.

Second. I see the pics of the 2 different followers on this thread, and I'm curious as to what make the same size may only hold 10 or 12 vs my 17rd mags? Is it in the butt plate or spring?

Enjoy

Kmac,
The 10 FS mag looks like this photo - basically it is like a compact mag with a long solid floorplate.

Thanks for the pic, I've never seen one. I assumed (wrongly) that they just put a longer follower in to fill the space, now that I think of it they (the regulators) figured it would be too easy to replace the follower or cut it down.

I was having that problem and thought it was normal, then I bought a new magazine (yes, I actually found one) and that one slid in easily with a nice "click" just like an empty mag. I took the follower out of the new one and and old one and compared them. They didn't look anything alike. I called S&W customer service and they said "Yes, the followers have been changed, you can send your magazines back and we'll exchange them, or do you just want me to send you some followers"? I opted for the followers, hopefully they will work the same as my new magazine. As I stated earlier, I can get the 12th round in loading it by hand but apparently there isn't enough "give" in the stack of rounds to easily seat the mag with the slide forward. I'll report back after I get the new followers. I've attached a couple of pictures of the new and old followers that I took and was going to send to S&W but didn't have to.

I wonder if the new follower also helps with the loading of the first round as well...I sometimes have a problem getting the first round to go into the magazine. As for the extra firm smack, I fell that under pressure, you're going to give the magazine that little extra anyway, especially if you practice that way.

From a fellow inmate of the insane assylum (Commiefornistan):
As you load the magazine, tap the butt or back to ensure the rounds are lining up snuggly in the magazine. I assure you that working the springs (not just leaving them compressed) is what "softens them up". My 2 year old 10 round mags have about 300 cycles each in them and they are pretty easy to load up now.

I have no problems loading 10 rds in my mp40c. As far as putting the mag in the gun, it goes in but you have to give it a good shove or open the slide and it will click right in very easy

I got the new followers from S&W and they now load fine.

However, the only issue I really have with my M&Ps is having to really slam home the magazine if the slide is closed. A Glock mag slides right in with no effort. The M&P has to rammed in. I have had all my magazines loaded for months and stored full, so at this point I will assume the spring is not going to soften up.

Slamming them in is not a huge deal at the range, but could it become a problem in a life threatening situation? Very possibly.

Not at first. I loaded 9 only for a year, then one day I found I could load 10. Just stick with 9 and keep them loaded, eventually you will fit 10.
