So, here's the deal: My 11 and 14 year old daughters shoot. Usually whatever I have and bring to the range like my model 36 S&W revolver or my Kel-Tec P32. They don't like shooting my Ruger SR9c so much. I rented a Walther P22 at my local range and they loved it. Eventually a used one showed up for sale locally and I jumped on it but...it's not the 3.4 inch barrel that we all liked, it's the 5 inch target barrel with the comp. on the front of the slide. We don't like the added length and want the shorter length barrel. I don't want to spend $130 on the shorter barrel from Walther. I tried posting here and on other forums in the "classified" section to see if someone wanted to trade barrels, but no answers so... I'm thinking of taking the gun to my locak gunsmith and having my barrel cut and crowned. The question is...can I do that? The stock barrels have a threaded end and a thread protector. Do I really need that? Last chance, if someone wants to trade, email me at [email protected] , otherwise, I need advice on the cut and crown.

IIRC, the "thread protector" is a barrel nut. I don't believe you will be able to mount the barrel properly without it.

I didn't like the long barrel either. The weight/front sight assembly has to be reset after just a few magazines because it shoots loose even with Loctite. I ordered the short barrel assembly several months ago but they are backordered. I don't have a threads or a thread protector on mine unless it's inside/under the front assy. But I think if I unscrew the lock screws I can just slide it off. I hadn't thought about cutting it back but it might be worth looking into.
