Can I remove the flash hider from my Sport II myself, or do I take it in?

Simple flash hider remove? Do it yourself with a friend and you'll be done in 1 minute.

Yep. Or, by yourself like I did. Crescent wrench and a rag to protect the finish, and you're done. This goes for removal of the old device, and install of the new.

BTW, why are you putting on a thread protector? Why not a brake/compensator? Sure, it's "just" a 5.56, but reducing recoil and muzzle rise is never a bad thing.

Maybe a direct thread can?

Nice. I sometimes forget not everyone is stuck behind enemy lines in Commiefornia, and can actually have cool toys. :o

I'm acutally waiting for my 5.56 can to get out of jail, but I used an AAC flash hider with QD threads for the AAC can so I had to swap out the standard bird cage too. Easy job too with some of the new flash hiders that don't need to be timed. Rockset, screw it on, torque and done.

He needs to buy a portable visce and just clamp it to the kitchen table-problem solved.

He doesn't even need to do that. Borrow a neighbor to hold the rifle for 5 minutes and the problem is solved with no further expenditures.

Dang, guys - he's talking about removing a flash hider, not the barrel itself. No need for all those receiver clamps and such.
All you need to do is sandwich the barrel between two chunks of soft wood, tighten up on it a bit, and unscrew the flash hider. If the barrel turns, wrap the barrel with masking tape, reclamp it and go again.
In fact, it being a flash hider, you can almost always remove them without even clamping the barrel in anything.
Y'all overthink some things......

Edit: No vise? No problem - take a couple of 2x4 stud cutoffs, lay them on the floor and sandwich the barrel between them and get a buddy or wife to put a foot on the top one and press down....unscrew the flash hider. If your buddy or wife ain't heavy enough, go to the local watering hole and wink at ol' fat Wanda over there in the corner and ask her to help you.
