My girlfriend bless her heart bought me a sig 229. I hate it. Think I could trade it for a 686 or a 69 outright? The sig has never been fired

Ask her! If you explain the situation and it is OK with her go for it. I don't know the Sig value, but 686's used start $600-ish. There are MANY people out there that want the semi autos. You can see what they (both) are roughly worth by looking at Gun Broker to see what they actually SELL for. GOOD LUCK!!! Bob

I see that Sig as a commodity , and the 686 as something that makes the heart go pitter-patter.

Don't hesitate.

There's a 229 on GB right now with 9 bids and 4 hours left, at only $338.33. The 686s on the other hand, are going for over $550, with days left in the bidding.

And if you get the 686, you have a .357 revolver with a trigger like butter, as opposed to a nondescript autoloader in .40. :)

You probably would be able to, since the SIG is new.

Why do you hate it? Is it the way it feels in your hand?

Do you really hate the 229, or do you just want the 686? All I can tell you is that the 229 is an excellent pistol. I had one, sold it, and have regretted it ever since. Value wise, they are probably in the same ballpark, unless the 686 you would be buying would be a -4 or less variation in which the 686 could be worth more.

My vote is to keep the SIG and buy the 686 when you can afford it.

Good advice. Heed it and learn. If you want a 686 just go buy one---but Keep the Sig.

These guys are right! No matter what is said or not said there is a great potential for some hard feelings. And I know women, they have astonishing long term memory. If you trade or sell that Sig you are going to hear about it one day, maybe ten years from now, when you think that all is forgotten!

Go buy that 686.

I don't think trading is a good plan for your relationship but that's your call. To bad you won't give the Sig a try as they are one of the best semi auto's made and by the way if the one she gave you is new it's more like a $900 pistol and would have cost that much anywhere she bought it.

I love S&W revolvers and I also own 7 Sig's which are my home defense and carry guns. My carry gun is a Sig P228 9mm which is the model made before the P229. The break down for cleaning of the Sig pistols is a snap and it takes less than 10 seconds to have broken down and also for reassembly.

My neighbor at our winter condo in Texas is a Mexican national. He is well educated and speaks better English than I speak Spanish. Before I took him to a local range there he had never held a gun in his life. I let him shoot a rifle and a few handguns including another revolver and a semi auto, the 686 was the last. When he say it as I took it out of its box all he could say was "WOW". I handed it to him, he held it like something precious.

That experience spoke volumes to me about the beauty of the 686

Don't do it! You'll be sorry, believe me. LEARN to love it. This comes from a guy who has been married for 43 years. ;)
f.t.

Ditto. If you ever want to see another gun from her (or see her again, for that matter!), you'd best lean to love it!

Shoot the tar out of it to show her how much you love it. Then start dropping hints as to what you want, like leaving catalog web pages open in your browser (especially effective on your phone, then make an excuse for her to use it.)

Follow that plan, and you're liable find the revolver of your dreams under the Christmas tree. Trade it, and you had best learn how to tie a tie, that is, if you're not spending Christmas alone:-)

You definitely better listen to the relationship advice. Learn to love it or regret your decision not to.

Very important questions about your girlfriend I think are pertinent to your decision and your health:
1) Is she Irish too?
2) Is she a red head?
3) Is she South Boston Irish ( this is the one about your health)

Keep the Sig. Tell her you dont want to shoot it too much cuz you pamper it like her and save up money for Smith wheelies.

Get on Sigforum and ask them. They will hate the 686 (exaggerating here of course). It was very kind of the GF to buy you the gun. So you know the saying "The more guns the merrier" and go out and buy a few S&Ws :)

The Sig new cost her over 800 bucks easily. That Sig is worth more then the 686. My wife would have no problem with me selling a gun she bought me to buy one I wanted more. She would want me to be happy. I am sure you have already thanked her profusely for the Sig. Now tell her you appreciate it but want the 686 more. I doubt she will care

If money is not an issue then keep both. With a mortgage and two kids I'm at the point that if I want a new gun I gotta sell one. Let a lot of nice ones go away including a mint 686-3. But that's life.

Leave it in unfired condition, tell her there just ain't any ammo to be found in that caliber, and throw it on Sigforum for a trade.

No sense lying to her over something so trivial. My wife and I exchange probably 80% of the gifts we buy each other. Never had any hard feelings either way.

Unless she's a "gun gal", she probably saw how nice the Sig looked (and it IS a nice semi auto), saw the ridiculous price tag, and just felt like she was getting her man a great gift. She might not even have looked at revolvers because they are "old". She did a great thing. Now tell her how much you appreciate it, buy her some flowers and a nice dinner, and sell that Sig for the 686. She'll get more enjoyment from watching you with a gun you REALLY want over the one she bought you that you didn't.
