7981 is an assembly number; model numbers weren't assigned until 1957 and didn't start appearing until 1958. They would be stamped as "MOD XX".
Your revolver was probably built in the mid to late 1930s.

Are you talking about .38 specials or .32 Longs?

You asked for the date of manufacture. The shipping date can be close to the manufactured date or years apart, especially during the depression era 1929 to 1940.
A photo of your gun will help us determine the manufactured time period or answers to the following questions:
Do the grips have medallions?
Is the serial number stamped or marked in pencil on the back side of the right grip panel?
Does that number match the gun's serial number?
Do the grips have a rounded butt or square butt shape?
Does the ejector rod knob under the barrel have a mushroom shape or a barrel shape?

I will still place my money on somewhere around 1940 ship date. The manufacture ended in 1941 at serial number 534532. Sure some languished in inventory, but most were still in some semblance of order.
The 3rd Model of the 32 Hand Ejector was manufactured from 1917 to around 1941, in serial number range 263,001 to 534,532. That means over a quarter-million were made in those years or around 11,000 a year. That means this model was a slow seller. A comparison would be the K frame 38 Military & Police that made almost 500,000 in the same time period or around 20,000 per year manufactured.
