Can Someone Please Help with value?

I have a gentleman offering me a S&W 1948 Pre-Model 10 , 5 Screw 38 Special Revolver on a local trade. The pistol is 90%, but doesn't have the original grips.

What might this be worth in a ballpark figure?

i bought one like that 3 or 4 years ago with the grips that matched, i paid 395.00 and thought i paid to much but now i don't, good investment as there will never be anymore like those.

Almost any S&W revolver is worth $200 if it functions.

Lots of good answers.

There are several comments that can be offered here. First, a lot of these guns
were made, like in the millions, so they are not scarce. Their new price today is
a lot higher, but that is just inflation. The point is that because of the quantity
of these revolvers, collector premium is not vey high.

Second, while condition is a subjective judgment, a 90% gun is a very acceptable
gun. Its on the very low end of the collector premium scale, but still an acceptable
gun.

Third, the grips are not original to the gun, but probably in nice condition, with
not a lot of wear, and hopefully no significant dings and dents. This is another
feature that puts the collector premium at a low level.

$200 is a very fair price. It will never be a highly-sought-after collectible, because
of the items mentioned above, but it should be a very presentable shooter, and
at a good price.

You do not mention bbl. length? A nice 2"er is worth more than most the others. I bought one last year,a 1952 model with mismatched, but correct grips for $375. Big Larry
