Hi, Payo, and welcome to the Forum. There are some great guys hanging out here on social gun media! The kind we like! Sometimes, not often, I've seen guys talking about, for example, "Well, ya couldn't touch that gun for less than $XXXXX." Stuff like what state you hail from helps, mildly, with a firearm's rarity in that area, and also helps us nosey guys if you live around here or there. But that's your choice. The gun is pretty clean, except for the rust! You can take the stocks off and clean up the rust by soaking it in one of thirty-two different solutions, etc. That's a joke, Payo! There's maybe 16 different solutions. Good luck.
Now, I'm pretty stupid when it comes to a gun I want when I see it for sale; sometimes in spite of its looks!
Your dad's gun, YOUR gun, if I were in the mood for a nice shooter, I couldn't go over $500 total. But many would pay more for reasons only they know. That's only me. The smart guys will be waking up in about 5-6 hours. Again, welcome to the forum that also teaches the ancient art of self defense called Klic Pau....
And how to justify spending the kid's college fund for a Registered Magnum with all the accessories.
Peace!

Payo, nice old Smith! JP@AK is right on, you inherited a .38 Military and Police from the mid-1920's. The Magna stocks are a later addition, but they look good on that gun and have been there for a while! Clean the rust off, oil it up good, and cherish your Dad's gun.
Here on the Left Coast, I would put an insurance value on it of between $500 and $650; retail, of course, would generally be less.

Encouraging indeed that no one has referred to it as a Model of 1905. Maybe it is just lighting or angle, but the grip checkering seems a little too widely spaced. In any event the grips are not period correct for your M&P, but that should make no difference to you. You might let us know if there is a serial number stamped on the inside surface of the right grip panel, and if so, what it is.

Welcome! Collectors call your revolver a 38 Military & Police, 4th Change. The 4th Change added a hammer safety block to the mechanism increasing carry safety. Unfortunately, the hammer and trigger are plated, but would have been case hardened from the factory. I cannot agree with $400 or more in value as compared to those sold on Gunbroker or other online auctions. Replating, wrong stocks, covered from stem to stern with scratches. and what looks like pitting under the plating results in a gun that would sell for $300 to $350 today. That aside, it is your grandfather's gun and you probably have no intention of selling it. I would bet it is in fine working order and probably still a very accurate gun at the range. Get some ammo and shoot it!
