I received this S&W Mod 36 from my sister when she died, our father had given it to her. The model number on the crane and under the handle is 26705. On the crane is also Mod-36 and by the serial number are an '8' and 'E'. On the butt, is the number 224030.
Much Thanks

That looks like a beautiful Chiefs Special, Model 36, Flat Latch, and may also have the original diamond grips numbered to the gun! From the serial number on the butt, after 1957 and before 1962. Flat latch models and guns with grips that are numbered to the gun are worth a premium. Having said that, if that gun came from my father, I would make sure it stayed in the family, :)

Someone else here will probably have a better date.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum. The number on the butt, 224030, is the serial number. The other numbers are fitters numbers used during production to keep critical fitted parts together. You've already found the model number, Mod-36. I'm just guessing a ship date after 1959 and before 1962, as I have 3" barrel version #273459 which shipped October 1962.

Welcome aboard from ol' Wyo.

My sincere condolences on your loses.

Two other Chiefs on my list bracket your Chiefs Special Model 36. S&W shipped them in January and March '62. S&W didn't assemble or ship firearms in serial number order so there's no assurance yours shipped in or near that first quarter of '62, but it's probable.

To date a 36 year old Model, first send a dozen roses, then read some nice poetry and take her out for an expensive dinner. Only feed her the finest ammunition and hold her in a fur lined holster - LOL!! :D :D

Another warm welcome to this excellent Forum. You certainly have come to the right place for information.

We also regret your family losses, and hope that you will find a place for this worthy Model 36 among your treasured possessions. They are just the right size, beautifully made, handsome to behold and, knowing family history, a comfort indeed.

All best.

I came here to see if I would be the first one to post something like this. Thankfully, I was beat to the punch......line.

OP:

Sorry for the circumstances of acquiring that fine Model 36. Take care of it, and hopefully you can pass it on to the next generation of the family.

ThanksPl

Thanks everyone for the kind words and info about my gun. I do like this this firearm very much. It shoots easy, is very accurate, is a snap to reload for it, and it fits in a pocket very comfortably. Plus the family history!
Thanks again
