Can you identify this?

I've been reading and learning (ALOT) on this forum, but this is my first post. I just bought a Sport, and noticed this on the hammer. It looks and feels like white-out. Is it there intentionally, or should I just clean it off?

Does it wipe off? My first thought is that it is something like white lithium grease.

It doesn't really wipe off, but I can scratch it off with my fingernail. Like dried up white-out. Old grease is my thought, too, now that you mention it.

Thanks for all the replies. Whatever it was, it scraped right off.
As for the "fishy"ness, the camera wouldn't focus right, and that was the first thing I found to put behind it.
