Canned Chili

I make my own.............................

but if the SHTF and I had to go the "canned" route.......the can of chili would be a starting point...... add a can of black beans...... diced tomatoes ........ season to taste with chili powder, cumin and cilantro...... keep the crushed red pepper handy.

serve over rice if needed........

No cans......just a roadtrip....

I suppose if you had to you would eat whatever you could get your hands on. Having said that I have never found a canned chili that I cared for. Now if you don't want to make your own, ingredients by ingredients you might want to try Wick Fowlers Chili mix. Comes in a box, you add meat of your choice and you can tune it to mild to wild. Once you have had Southwest chili or TexMex you will throw rocks at canned chili.

When I was on temporary duty and funds were really tight i would eat really bad canned chill, potted meat, Vienna sausages, smoked herring, sardine i would buy at the commissary. I had to hunker down during a Typhoon a couple times those things came in handy.

Living a ranch with no electricty, refrigeration etc. That stuff you ate was daily fare when I was a kid.

Haven't touched any of it since I left home for college 60 years ago.

I could eat it if I had to but I'd rather not.

I will eat out of a can but I prefer home made. Lot of people here in Houston stocking up on canned goods after the last couple of storms. Those fresh ingredients go away when power and resupply disappear for extended periods. Some people around me still haven't got back into their homes so stocking up cans makes more sense than it used to. Ate out of cans for most of a year straight in Nam so I won't starve.

Sad fact is, I'd eat that despite the fact it looks like the corncob after a trip to the outhouse :o

"Is that just south of Glen Burnie on Ritchie Highway?"

Yes, just north of Rt.100 in front of Marley Station Mall.

When they built the mall, they tried to buy them out and get them to move into the food court. They told mall where they could go and now the mall is just barely hanging on and Ann's is stronger than ever.

i defrosted some hamburger to make chili tomorrow.
it will take me 15 minutes to chop onions n peppers, open canned beans n tomatoes n toss it all in the pot.
what exactly are you saving by buying canned chili?

A lot of you guys talk like turning your nose up at canned chili, and other canned meat products.

However when the SHTF, and the cupboards start looking bare, you'd be surprised how good some of that stuff can look.

You bet homemade or restaurant chili is better than canned. If my refrigerator and stove worked, or if restaurants are open I probably will not be eating chili. It needs to be shelf stable and safe to eat even if you do not have a can of Sterno to heat it up. I still like hearing about peoples' likes in chili and survival foods. :D

I think quite a few just didn't bother to read the OP.
Canned hams, 1 lb.'ers like DAK and such along with canned fruit are finding their way to the pantry.
Pop Tarts, canned or tinned fish, packs of Lance's crackers.
Peanut butter and pickles.

Probably the biggest break I've had is losing water only once after a storm. Potable water on hand makes dealing with the salt content in the canned goods and using dried beans, peas, etc. much easier.

I have Armour no bean chili about once a week for lunch. A few shots of Franks Red Hot and it's good to go. I also eat Hormel canned tamales for breakfast on occasion. By no mean gourmet but I like it.

Mals

My SIL didnt cook so my BIL did all the cooking and everything came out of a can, one day when I was there he asked me if I wanted some Chilli, I said yes, he opened a can and heated it up, I dont know what kind it was but I had all I could to put it down, one think you knew for sure, when you ate at their house you would not go back for seconds.[emoji46]

wolff brand chili is orange.

if i dont have some homemade chili in the freezer, then anything that requires chili is off the menu.

i'd eat it during a natural disaster, but otherwise... no.

When Ike got done, our and several other communities were without power for 7 days. When power was restored about the only thing left in the pantry was hominy (I'm still trying to figure out how it got in there).

As others have said, when you get really hungry your taste buds will sign a waiver.

PS: warm beer is still beer.
