$.99 tamales are great. ;-) Actually the ones from Costco aren't to bad for store bought. Not as good as my grandmother's home made though.
My father made damned good chili.
The two things I didn't inherit from my father were his height and his cooking ability.
I picked up a bag (literally a cloth bag) of tamales from the local Heinen's last night. I think the brand is "Texas Deli" or something similar. Says they're wrapped in corn husks. Plan to have them for dinner along with Wolf (with beans, thanks Heinen's!) chili and rice.
I was in a pinch last night so stopped by the store to get something to eat. Was going just get soup-and fresh tamales-but no fresh available so I saw canned Tamales--Bushs Refried beans--and Wolf Brand Chili. Well, I needed the last two--but decided to try the spiced version of Tamales--and like I figured--were probably as bad as eating worm poop.
I mixed real deli cheese to melt with the tamales, as well as some chili with some refried beans. The beans and chili were good--but even dressing up the "'spicy""talmales--which had no taste and no spices either--I used two table spoonfulls of salsa verde--to ad the missing spice as well as kill the taste of the canned tamales. Well,it added spice and killed the taste enough to eat--but boy--the tummy wasnt happy at all.
I had to kill the after taste--with some fruitcake.
At least learning this lesson--it only cost me about .89 cents. Before you throw bricks--I DID go by and try to buy in-house made fresh Tamales--but they were out of the Beef,Chicken, Pork--but only had the bean tamales. So--since I wanted something pseudo-Mexican--I tried the canned stuff.
I like Hormel tamales in a can. I like Rays chile in a can. I like the chile on the tamales. I usually eat them smothered in cayenne pepper but can do without it!
When I was single most of my meals came from cans or freezer packs. I guess I got acclimated.![]()
Shame on you. You didn't go to HEB, did you???
Course, if you were up Nawth, I would expect something like this but a Texican? You deserve what you got....... LOL, just kidding.
I have found that nothing really "good" comes from a can...

Nah, venison/ pork trumps chicken any day.Having eaten far more than my share of tamales and enjoying them, they are only edible when freshly made. Canned or frozen they are a waste of money. Chicken Jalapeno are my favorite. IMHO, Rick
