Canned Tamales.NOT making that mistake again!!!!!

I've never cared much for tamales, especially now that I really have to watch the sodium.

$.99 tamales are great. ;-) Actually the ones from Costco aren't to bad for store bought. Not as good as my grandmother's home made though.

I dont know but--I cant imagine paying .10 cents more will make much a difference??

I think that I'd rate canned tamales maybe a step or two above White Castle hamburgers; both being acts of self abuse. My company used to put the WC sliders into the gedunk machines when they wanted staffing reductions by attrition.

However, on the other side of the equation there are good tamales out there. Haven't been to Natchez in around ten years, but there is this place overlooking the Mississippi called "Fat Momas". Shes got some good ones.

Jjust looked them up and found that by God they're still in business and they ship! Gotta get me a couple dozen and some of that "knock you naked" margarita mix. For medicinal purposes, of course.

I picked up a bag (literally a cloth bag) of tamales from the local Heinen's last night. I think the brand is "Texas Deli" or something similar. Says they're wrapped in corn husks. Plan to have them for dinner along with Wolf (with beans, thanks Heinen's!) chili and rice.

Those might also be available at HEBs? I plan on checking tomorrow or Tuesday. I know the Wolfs brand is--I picked up 6 cans recently.

I like Hormel tamales in a can. I like Rays chile in a can. I like the chile on the tamales. I usually eat them smothered in cayenne pepper but can do without it!
When I was single most of my meals came from cans or freezer packs. I guess I got acclimated. :)

:eek: I was in a pinch last night so stopped by the store to get something to eat. Was going just get soup-and fresh tamales-but no fresh available so I saw canned Tamales--Bushs Refried beans--and Wolf Brand Chili. Well, I needed the last two--but decided to try the spiced version of Tamales--and like I figured--were probably as bad as eating worm poop.

I mixed real deli cheese to melt with the tamales, as well as some chili with some refried beans. The beans and chili were good--but even dressing up the "'spicy""talmales--which had no taste and no spices either--I used two table spoonfulls of salsa verde--to ad the missing spice as well as kill the taste of the canned tamales. Well,it added spice and killed the taste enough to eat--but boy--the tummy wasnt happy at all.

I had to kill the after taste--with some fruitcake.

At least learning this lesson--it only cost me about .89 cents. Before you throw bricks--I DID go by and try to buy in-house made fresh Tamales--but they were out of the Beef,Chicken, Pork--but only had the bean tamales. So--since I wanted something pseudo-Mexican--I tried the canned stuff.

Shame on you. You didn't go to HEB, did you???

Course, if you were up Nawth, I would expect something like this but a Texican? You deserve what you got....... LOL, just kidding.

Actually, HEBs is where I went but--it was about 9PM,and they were sold out of te real tamales--cept for bean tamales--and I wasnt in the moood for them. In hindsight--I SHOULDA bought the package of bean tamales.

I have found that nothing really "good" comes from a can...

One canned item I can't live without is Rotel brand tomatoes with green chile. I usually buy the original. They make cooking all kinds of soups, stews, guacamole etc. etc. easier and better. Another great item from a can is Kirkland brand (Costco) peanuts. They have intense peanut flavor with a wonderful hard crunch texture.

However, I will agree that canned tamales are to be avoided along with Vienna sausages. Ugh.

Agreed. Chili, stew, soup==all get a canful! I get it at 1/2 price at Big Lots and stock up when I find it. keep a dozen or so cans outside.

When things don't taste good I use plenty of hot sauce and ketchup.

I know the food is bad when sparky(dog) doesn't eat it. She ate poop when she was alive. So it must taste worst than refried poop. Never had to pickup poop my dog was going green before green was cool.
We would pick it up before she got to it.

Having eaten far more than my share of tamales and enjoying them, they are only edible when freshly made. Canned or frozen they are a waste of money. Chicken Jalapeno are my favorite. IMHO, Rick

Once when I was 12 or so I was with mama getting groceries. I saw those Hormel tamales & I just had to have a can. That was 46 years ago & I NEVER will eat another one!!!! She made me over the next couple of days eat the whole can! Good thing it was summer & school was out because I lived in the bathroom. The only thing Mexican I will eat now is a taco salad with Doritos that the wife makes.

Now as for Dinty Moore Beef Stew, I love that!
