Canned Soup

When we kids were sick, mom would fix us milked toast.

She would toast some white bread, butter it, cut it into 1" squares,
place it in a bowl and add some warm milk over it.

Sugar can be added as well as cinnimon or even brown sugar if needed.

It was the only thing I wanted, when I had the "Mumps".

Here is hoping you get better, soon.

You beat me to it. I prefer adding milk instead of water to my Campbells tomato soup and havarti is my first choice for a grilled cheese sandwich. My mouth is watering as I type.

I add 1/2 can of milk as I don't like it too thin and then I mix a tbs of sriracha in.

Warms your tummy and clears your sinuses.

I have been sick the last few days and none of my normal fare sounds good.
I have not eaten canned anything for 30+ years but I sent Mrs Chukar to the store to get me some canned soup for a quick easy meal.
I tried Campbells New England clam chowder and the baked potato with cheddar cheese and bacon chunks.
First the clam chowder would leave you believing clams and flavor were both endangered species.
I opened the baked potato and warmed it, one spoonful and it went to the disposer. I didn't bother looking for the cheddar or bacon.
How do people eat this trash?
Can anybody give me a lead on a decent canned soup?

I may be mocked for this but my favorite is Campbells chicken noodle.

I make my own Chicken noodle soup.
No caned stuff comes close. Freeze what is not eaten for the next time...
Even any of the caned clam chowder hurts your eyes looking for the clams.....
Make my own of that also.

I don't know why you would be. Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup is just a few years shy of being 90 years old. I'm sure a lot of us were raised on it and I'll bet very few of us ever turned it down. The boys here love it with a PB sandwich.

I don't mind canned soup at all although have a few favs. I do really like home made the best. I happen to live in a medium size city and I like to shop in Asian/Korean markets. Great selection of Ramen noodles. I like duck, spicy pork, etc. Not your typical American flavors. Then I cook up chicken, pork, beef, seafood, egg, tuna, etc. Add that to the ramen for a great soup. Be creative and its better than canned. Almost as fast as a canned one.

The soup hasn't changed but we have.

From the Cleveland Clinic:

"It is not uncommon for our sense of taste to change, or diminish, with time. This is due to many factors. As we age, the number of taste buds that we have decreases. This usually begins to occur in our 40s if we're female or in our 50s if we're male."

"At the same time, our remaining taste buds also begin to shrink, or atrophy, and do not function as well. This results in decreased sensitivity to taste, typically affecting salty or sweet, and eventually sour or bitter foods. Around the same time, our sense of smell may also start to decrease, which can contribute to the loss of taste."

I also think the apparent change in taste is a reduction in the salt in some canned soup.
I usually have a couple of Single serving size Campbells Creamy Tomato stored at work.
Heat in the microwave.
Sure hits the spot on a cold day in the trenches.

Progresso soup is ok. I usually only eat soup if I'm not feeling well. Chicken noodle, of course.

But their New England clam chowder isn't bad, ditto the Italian wedding soup.

The killer, of course. is the amount of sodium in canned soup.

I don't have high blood pressure, but I don't want that much salt either.

Most canned soups I treat as a base. For instance clam chowder needs a can of diced up clams added. Cream of shrimp gets the same treatment but with shrimp.
I usually need something in the soup to chew on to satisfy me. The exception is, believe or not, dry pack Lipton's chicken noodle soup. There's always boxes of it in the pantry. Something about it I really like.

You tomato soup fans owe it to yourself to try Trader Joes. They have a bisque, a red pepper and tomato and straight tomato soup and all are excellent. I was never a fan of tomato soup until my wife started buying their stuff. Our nearest Trader Joe's is over 100 miles away so when my wife goes to Kansas City, a stock up always occurs.

No can soup for you!
48 oz water, 1 yellow onion minced, 2 lb carrots sliced (feel free to dump add'l veggies), 4 bullion cybes, 2 lb chicken breast diced, half box of orzo pasta. Cook until carrots are soft, about 90 min. Mangia. Joe
