Cannot find rubber grips that I like

Dang! Maybe I'm just too picky but trying to find rubber grips for a square butt, Model 29 that is proving to be a tough task. All the Hogue's that I can find have that hideous flap on the right grip that covers the S&W logo. Pachmayr's seem to lack consistent good quality ( problems with the screw not fitting properly, seams don't line up properly, etc.and have the big, gold, ugly lion medallion in the middle.

What I have liked are the S&W logo Hogues from years past that had the speedloader cut-out on both grips but those are hard to find.

I like the wood grips that came with the gun but they do tend to bite me just a bit under recoil.

Any ideas other than keep looking?

I'm having the same trouble finding the right grips for my S&W 3913 & 908. On one of my 3913's I have the Hogue's on it but the grip is a bit too fat for my hands. They do however absorbed the recoil very well!

I actually like the feel & size of the factory grips, but the felt recoil is awful. If I could find something just a tad thinner than the Hogue's that would be great!

I've got Culina English Walnut grips on my 29 and they don't bite me at all. You might want to check with John after the first and see what he can do for you ([email protected]). He can make you targets or combat. Here's what my English Walnut targets look like.

Have you tried the Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips? I have them on my 329 and found that they were the missing link between the Hogue and older style Pach's. They have a blacked out logo so the lion shouldn't be as obvious and they shouldn't cover the S&W logo

Recoil being the issue get a pair of leather bicycle padded palm fingerless gloves. Can shoot up plenty of ammo at the range!

I did consider them but they aren't made for square butt frames.

I've never seen a set of rubber grips I liked, and they all seem narrower than the original target grips. The wide cross section of the old targets divided the felt recoil better..a former girlfriend who used to go shooting with us preferred to shoot a friend's brother's 4" 29 with fairly stout handloads over my 1911 or 28 Highway Patrolman with just Magnas.

I'm with you on the Smith & Wesson Hogue style grips. I'm not a fan of the "flap" and prefer the speedloader cutout on both sides. They are indeed hard to find. I think all of mine came on guns I have bought. They don't sell them anymore either. I check for them at all the gun shows and occasionally find a set.

I've got a set of Pachmayr open back finger groove rubber grips on a 4" 629. They are the Gripper Professional model. They give me a better reach to the trigger due to the open back. I usually don't use finger groove grips because they don't fit my fingers but these are ok.

Currently Ebay has three used sets. Search for "pachmayr sn-gp". Make sure screw is included.

Am a big fan of “Goodyears”. Ugly or not, if you have smaller hands, they are the perfect grip especially for an N frame. Factory Magnas are not enough and targets are just too large for me.
I have several guns with the Hogue/Smith grips. On others, I have found the Hogue Monogrip to be very comparable minus the Smith emblem. I do have to say I dislike the screw and hanger bracket arrangement on the Monogrip. Once they are on I forget all about the hanger bracket.
Best part is the Monogrip is very cost efficient.

I hear 'ya on the stupid right side. But as you have found choices are slim to none.

I use them because they feel good to shoot with. When wiping the gun after shooting I pull them off so as not to get that sideplate finish wear line you see after they have been on the gun for years.

Wood grips don't bite;it is the improper fit that bites.Wood grip that fit won't hurt you.
If you want to go the rubber way,I'd simply invest in a Dremel tool and buy the largest rubber grip that fits the model you have and start grinding rubber particles away until they fit my hand.Of course,the end result won't look ''exposition grade'' but for that purpose(or simply for when you'll want to sell the gun)you put the stock grips back on.But when you'll be shooting the gun,you'll fell more confortable and be more accurate with it.

Very few finger groove grips fit my hand. I have modified several pairs of rubber grips, both Pachmayr and Hogue, using a Dremel tool.

The only rubbers i would even consider are uncle Mike's. I may use a pair for hunting with magnum loads, but they come off after the season ends.

I'm disappointed.....

I'm disappointed hearing that Pachmehr's quality has dropped. I used to tell everybody to go Hogue and Pachmehr first. If it's the screw that is the problem I think I'd get the Pachmehrs and trade out the screw if it doesn't work.

Depends on WHERE the recoil is an issue. I can handle my 460 or 44 mag with wood grips all day. Put a set of targets on either one and maybe 2 cylinders and I'm done. Trigger guard beats the hell out of my middle knuckle on my middle finger. So I either have Hogue hardwoods or now one set of combats that fit me incredibly well.

Pachmayr Presentation grips are my favorites for N frames. Though I do have the Hogue monogrip on my 29-3 Classic Hunter - bu only because that is what came on it from the factory.

I had smooth rosewood Cokes on my M-29, and recoil didn't bite.

I think you need the old, two-panel Pachmayr Presentation or Uncle Mike's, if those (Mike's) were made for N-frames.

I use Pachmayr Grippers on my GP-100, partly because that set fits my gun, and I had a devil of a time stocking that gun. Few aftermarket grips fit the frame. I think Ruger made a mistake with that grip tenon. A normal full frame, as on their Security-Six, is a better idea.

I wouldn't buy modern Pachmayrs unless I had the gun in the store and they let me try the grips there. I like the little gold medallion, but grip fit to most guns is very "iffy."

I'm intrigued by your name, Prairie Viper. I think this must be Crotalus viridis? Going by memory on that scientific name. Bear Bio or Patvince may correct me, if needed. Do you have to kill many of them, or just like snakes? Do you admire them, identify with them, as I do leopards?
