I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but after collecting S&Ws for over 20 years (and shooting for many more) I shot my first IDPA this morning. What a great time! As a IDPA newbie, I went through the stages with a SIG 228 (in the beginner group), and didn't do too badly. The advanced competitors were very impressive, and somewhat intimidating with their speed and accuracy. After shoulder surgery in a few weeks, I'll have another match each month through October to enjoy. I'm hoping to try it with a revolver at least once before the season ends.

If you've never tried IDPA, it's definitely worth it ... lots of fun, and a great way to work on shooting drills/skills besides standard target range stuff.

The thing that keeps most people out of IDPA is the intimidation. Most American males believe that since they are American Males they were born with the shooting gene and are already a great shot. They fear being shown different. Those advanced shooters want you to be advanced too and will step on each other trying to help you get there. Enjoy it and bring friends!

mc5aw,
Depending where in PA you are located, you may have many more IDPA opportunities available to you. I'm in the Allentown area and have a match within a 30 minute drive available every Sunday. I also shoot a weekly indoor match all year long. I'm hooked big time.

If you like IDPA, try USPSA. Very similar, a bit more freestyle based, with higher round counts.

Then shoot a high-round count USPSA match with a revolver!

Thank you for sharing this. Great statements. Hope all will read.

mc5aw,

I just had the same experience!

Several years ago I took as many tactical shooting instructions as I could find and afford (couple of LFIs and several other major instructors). Then had shoulder surgery, got old, and fell into just doing static shooting from the bench when I went to the range.

Last Saturday I shot my first IDPA course at a range over in east TX and it all came rushing back to me. The eyesight is worse, the trigger control needs brushing up, etc., but the techniques and tactics are all still there.

I'm hooked and joined IDPA on line as soon as I got home. Been looking at clubs closer to home for the next one.

Bob
