My wife and I will be going to Cape Cod in a couple of weeks for a 5 day vacation getaway and will be flying in to Providence RI and renting a car. Never been there before and don't know anything about it, any recommendations on what to do/not do or things to see?

I was there, Providence, in 2011. I recall a charming little college town, with a lot of inexpensive restaurants. Walking around that downtown area, and the Brown University campus, would be a relaxing way to spend a few hours.

I like Woods Hole (the bottom part of Falmouth) as a place to walk around (worth visiting Nobska Light right outside town) and (if you want to invest the time) catch a ferry to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

Martha's Vineyard Is, or was, mostly alcohol free, you had to drive to Oaks Bluff to get a beer. Black Dog Tavern was no alcohol. Could have changed. With only five days, explore the Cape.

USS Massachusetts in Fall River Ma. Also a bucket list item: Springfield Armory Nat Monument and museum and The Springfield city museum has an impressive S&W display & collection. Also drive by the Impressive S&W 2100 Roosevelt Ave factory, in Springfield mass abt 60 miles west of the cape. We took in those on a trip to Cape Cod 2 year ago. Have a safe trip!

Aside from Cape Cod, you made the right call to fly into Providence versus Boston. Providence is a nice smaller airport and avoids the awful traffic congestion getting into or out of Boston.
Enjoy some local seafood. Clamcakes and chowder are a staple, perhaps even lobster if you want. There are lots of nice walks along various beaches and boardwalks. Some lighthouses to see. The interior of the Cape facing the bay is shallower and usually calmer water. The outside of the Cape facing the Atlantic is where you may see bigger surf, more seals, and possibly sharks. Don't swim with the seals- especially if you are wearing a black wet suit...
There are two bridges that cross the Cape Cod Canal. Both can back up significantly getting onto or off the Cape at peak travel times. Plan accordingly.
Have a great time with your wife.

I won an all expenses trip to Cape Cod for making "President's Club" (top 1% of pharma sales reps) in 2004. Stayed at the "Chatham Bars Inn" that's posh and over 100 years old, had a bar right behind the front desk as I remember. Story was that it was a speakeasy during prohibition. The leaves are turning, we’re two weeks ahead in Northern Vermont
from a Boston kid I'd take NEK of Vermont over the Cape any day but as far as the Cape goes Truro the second to last town on the peninsula of the Cape is beautiful.

The Cape is beautiful. You’re picking the perfect time of the year. Great food…I 
clam rolls. (Fried clams on a “hotdog” bun.) Beaches are gorgeous.
DO visit Provincetown. You’ll see some strange sights but at the tip, Race Point, you can watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean.
Be safe.

I was on Martha's Vineyard last week. Public areas are a tourist trap. They have the same crap for sale as Jackson Hole but it's branded with east coast names. Decent food and killer clam chowder along with haddock fish and chips. If you can do it, stay on the mainland, same or better food without the markup for the name of the place.

Last time I was there...years ago...P-Town was an eye-opening experience, but now what shocked us then is everywhere today. Also used to ride the dunes trails with 4wd, not sure if that's a thing anymore. Anyway, New England coast is beautiful and a unique place, enjoy your trip. As others have mentioned, great seafood.
OP where are you staying on the Cape? Are you landing in Providence and driving straight to the Cape ? All 5 days there ?

As was said above, do not, I repeat, DO NOT even think about bringing a firearm into this state. Other than that have a great trip, the Cape is nice this time of the year. Less traffic, and most places are still pen.
Same rules as London. Or Moscow.

I used to live in New Hampshire and went to the Cape once, years ago. Nothing worth seeing there. Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine can be nice, except the cities are just like Massachusetts.
P-Town is a bit off the norn for most folks. However the folks are helpful and the seafood is fresh. Whale watching can be fun also.
