My daughter and I shot it today, all I can say is wow! I really like the change. We were never a fan of the quad rail. The Magpul handguard is much more comfortable in my opinion. The sights were easier on my old eyes too. The orange front sight post was an improvement for me at least.
I probably spent too much on this project with the Magpul furniture and the Colt carry handle. Remember though that you can do the same conversion by getting a black takeoff carbine handguard and buying a cheaper carry handle. Buy the barrel nut adapter, a delta ring assembly and a front sight. Ebay and AR15.com EE are your friends for buying used parts.
I'm going to work on that picture now.

Very cool rifle. However, it is hard to believe done is an accurate description. More likely just a lull in the storm. I have been "done" several times and just added a red dot on a 45 degree rail today. They are fun and we always seem to find one more thing, especially for competition, that might give us another advantage. I started out using my 15-22 as a stock gun and now it is a full blown open gun. Go figure. Hope you guys have a great time with it.

I just gathered the parts that were mentioned on this board. There is a video somewhere here that is helpful. It doesn't really go into the barrel nut/delta ring in much detail. I had to figure out how the delta ring parts went together, really simple once I thought about it. Here is a list of what you will need to to do the exact same thing I did, adjust as required to suit yourself.
Tacticool or ShoeBoy barrel nut wrench (both are advertised on this board, your call)
Tacticool barrel vise jaws (I'm cheap, I got by with a couple of blocks of wood in my vise, but the right tool would be much easier)
TrueShot Technologies A2 front sight.
Tacticool freefloat handguard adapter nut
AR15 barrel nut wrench
AR15 barrel nut
AR15 delta ring parts (delta ring, circlip and spring)
AR15 carbine length foregrip and front cap
AR15 carry handle (you get what you pay for here, I would shop for a quality take off, but that's up to you)

This is the way I did it. Somebody else might have a better way, feel free to chime in.
Seperate your upper from your lower. Put the barrel in your vise between two blocks of wood or the barrel vise jaws. DO NOT PUT THE UPPER RECEIVER IN THE VISE, hold only by the barrel. Remove the flash suppressor by using sharp taps on a wrench with a hammer to break it free. Remove barrel from the vise, remove the end cap from the quad rail and slide on the barrel nut tool. Reclamp the barrel in your vise and remove the barrel nut by spinning the tool. Remove the barrel from the vise. Don't allow the barrel to slip back into the receiver and damage the extractor. Set the quad rail and the original barrel nut aside, you won't need them again.
Slip the Tacticool barrel nut on and hand tighten as much as you can holding the barrel. Now the delta ring assembly screws onto the Tacticool nut. A complete delta ring assembly is four parts (AR15 barrel nut, delta ring, circlip and spring. The easy way out is to buy everything already assembled) If you need a pic of how it goes together PM me. Put the barrel back in your vise and tighten the AR15 barrel nut using the AR15 barrel nut tool. It needs to be pretty tight but don't overdo it. The tricky part is getting it tight and timed in the right spot for your handguard to line up straight with the upper. If needed tighten the barrel nut a little more so the handguard lines up. Now take the front sight and use a screw to attach the front handguard ring. I used a tap to thread the hole, but your call on that. I used some LockTight on the screw. Now slide the sight onto the barrel to where it is in about the right spot. It's tight but it wii go on. Put the handguard on and slide the front sight down on the handguard snug enought it won't rattle. Get the sight as straight as you can and lightly snug the allen head screw. Take the sight post tool and remove the sight post from the old front sight and install it and the spring on the new sight post. Reinstall the flash suppressor. Put the lower and upper assembly back together.
Remove the rear sight from the upper receiver and screw on the AR carry handle. Now align the front sight. The instructions say to use a bore sight which I don't have. I used a straight edge from the sides of the carry handle to the front sight and got it as straight as possible. I used a brass mallet to lightly tap the front sight to where I wanted it. Tighten down the allen screw and go sight in the rifle. If the windage adjustment on the rear sight is too far either direction then go back to the shop and adjust the front sight assembly again. Do this until you are happy where it's located and then LockTight and tighten down the allen screw for the last time.
That's it, enjoy. If you have questions PM me and I will try to help. If you can change sparkplugs in your car and have a good bench vise you can do this.

wow. thanks so much for taking the time to explain it. i am going to work on figuring out the cost on how much all the parts you mentioned will come up to. gotta see if it is something i can afford to start soon, or if it will have to wait and be a future project.

No problem, glad to help. Buy a little at a time and you will have everything before you know it. Right now on eBay there are a couple of the regular type M4 handguards, I think you could pick up one cheap. I don't see any reason you couldn't use a mid length handguard as well, but I went with the carbine lenght because I didn't want to move the center of gravity forward on the rifle. Maybe not that big of a deal, I'm not sure. Shop all the AR suppliers for the delta ring stuff and look for the best deals.
PM me if you need any help. Remember, you need the True Shot front sight as the .22 barrel is a smaller in diameter than a true AR. If you happen to find a great deal on a true AR sight (I call $25 a great deal) it can be used with a spacer, but make sure it is the clamp on type and not the pin on. I have some of the spacer material I could send you. I used the True Shot sight and it made life much easier (nice quality too).

I priced everything out last night. Not taking shipping into consideration (which tacticool22 didn't charge anyways) I believe it was around $300 to do the modification. OUCH... That is almost as much as I paid for the gun... but let's not get into how much I spent modding my AR-15 
Last night I bought Tacticool's freefloat hand guard kit which included a lot of what was on your list. Today I bought a lot of the smaller stuff... Can't find a delta ring pack in stock.

Duh, what was I thinking? Of course you would need a 20" barrel for a rifle length handguard. I should know, I'm slowly gathering the parts for an A2 build. I just got in the 20" barrel.

I don't see how you would need to spend that much if you shop thoroughly. Shop the AR vendors carefully. Buy the delta ring parts seperately if you must and buy the cheapest stuff you can find on that. You can pay $10 for an AR barrel nut or you can pay $25. On a .22, the cheapest barrel nut will do the job just fine, all it is really doing is holding one end of the forearm. I already had my Magpul stock and forearm. For now just keep the grip and stock you have and find a takeoff black carbine forearm. And the barrel vise would be very nice if you can swing it, but not necessary, a pair of wood blocks did just fine for me. Good luck, go slow and have fun.

Tim3210, I guess I have a bad habit of not wanting to buy the cheapest stuff. But you are right, I suppose the parts won't take much of a beating on a .22. noob mistake.
I have already switched off my buttstock and pistol grip. In anticipation of buying the 15-22, I started buying parts a while ago. I bought a used magpul ACS stock and magpul MIAD grip both in OD green. Along with the small parts I ordered earlier today, I also ordered the Magpul handguards and the compatible vertical grip also in OD green. will try to get the other parts in the next week or so. gotta let the credit card cool off a bit.
i did buy the barrel vise jaws. it was one of the items included in the free float hand guard kit on tacticool's site.
the person who owned the gun before me didn't hold the barrel securely in the vise and screwed up the finish on the barrel. i got some re-blue stuff coming in the mail. going to see if i can cover up his mistake.

That's a better price on the barrel nut than I paid. It's good to buy quality parts, especially where it matters. I bought a quality carry handle although there's much cheaper ones. Reason why is it shows, better quality finish, and cheapies have been known to have crappy sight adjustments. To me that matters, while the delta ring stuff won't at all. Sounds like you are on your way. BTW, I'm a noob on the 15-22 also.
