I've been trying to located a source for cast bullets by a company that uses the Carnuba Red lube due to the bullets I currently use are just too smokey indoors. They have a blue lube and it's almost as bad as black powder. I've heard the Carnuba Red is great about not being as smokey but can't seem to find a bullet company that uses it...probably due to cost.

I found Beartooth and Ranger Rick's that use this lube but unfortunately I couldn't find anything under 44 caliber on their website and I mostly shot 38/357. Anyone have this problem with lube indoors or know where I cold find a source that may use the Carnuba lube? I don't cast anymore due to time restraints and had rather buy the finished product.
 
Try Gerry Allred at Silver Star bullets in Utah. He uses a red lube that I don't find smoky and he makes nice bullets. Good guy too. Contact him:

Check out Welcome To Penn Bullets INC., I used them several years ago and was quite happy with the performance of their cast bullets. As you can see from their site, they use some sort of a red colored lube, although I'm not sure if it is the carnuba red you are looking for.

Check out Welcome To Penn Bullets INC., I used them several years ago and was quite happy with the performance of their cast bullets. As you can see from their site, they use some sort of a red colored lube, although I'm not sure if it is the carnuba red you are looking for.

I checked out their website and they have a tab called "Lubricant" but when clicking on it, nothing happened. I figured it would probably tell me about the lube but just wouldn't open. I had thought someone had bought Penn Bullets out but apparently not. The 158 gr LSWC they show looks like the one I currently use but with the red lube. Guess I'll have to write them. Thanks for the link.
 
I checked out the Penn Bullets site to be sure they still used the red colored lube before adding my post. I also tried the "Lubricant" button thinking it would give detailed info on the type of lubricant they use. Let us know what they say.

You might also want to check out a company called Black Bullets International (BBI) www,blackbulletsinternational.com . They sell moly coated bullets, for the same price as standard cast bullets, The moly coating really does help to reduce the smoke. I would bet the smoke is reduced by 50 to 75 percent. I switched to plated bullets for shooting indoors, but the .45 cal plated bullets are too expensive so I started using the BBI bullets.
 
BBI has some strange looking bullets in 38 caliber. The only 158 gr they have looks like a round nose. I didn't see any SWC's on their website at all. I'm curious what molds they're using as they look different but the coating over the entire bullet is intriguing and may help with leading. I haven't heard of Poly-M coating before.

Rim Rock Bullets, Premium Cast Lead Bullets The thumbnails at this site shows all their bullets with a blue lube, but ever box of bullets I have ordered from them and there have been several come with a red lube applied. There is a contact link on the site and through personal contact I've had with Mr. Brown he's a very knowledgeable gentleman and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to discuss lubes with you.
 
I'll check these links out and thanks for posting them. I did write Penn earlier and received a response but, in replying the message came back to me indicating a failure notice due to the users Mailbox being full.:) I can believe that. Looks like it's time for a Spring cleaning at Penn.
 
Is there really that much difference in the lube used by commercial casters? Red, Blue what's the difference? I know Carnuba is a wax but what are the lubes made of??
 
Chey-Cast Bullets uses red lubricant on their bullets but I would contact them to be sure it's the lube you want. (but I'm sure it is) They provide good service and accurate bullets. I used to use them but haven't bought any bullets in a long while because I stocked up. When I do decide I need more I'll be buying from Missouri Bullets and Tennessee Valley Bullets. (also great guys with great bullets)
 
Ranger Rick and Mt. Baldy Bullet Company both use carnuba red lubricant from White Lable Lube Co. Just because a bullet lube is red colored does not mean it is carnuba red. I use White Lable Lube Co.'s lube on the bullets I cast, and have less smoke and soot than what most commercial lead bullets give.

Dude, you mean you don't know the difference between red and blue?

I learned that in kindergarten! :D

All joking aside, even one manufacturer has different colors that may be the exact same lube.

I'm thinking, among their lubes, color is the only difference.

Usually, in a lube there are many ingredients. The most common lube is 50/50 Beeswax/Alox. Not liquid Alox like from Lee, but a more concentrated type. White Label sells that too!

Most of the time there is Beeswax included, or paraffin. There is usually some type of "grease" like stuff and the rest is "fluff" concocted by folks experimenting with what they have on hand most of the time.


I have made my own lube. 2/3 Beeswax, 1/3 Liquid Xlox. This will go in a pinch. I have never had any leading with this lube. If you go to castboolits you will see a section devoted to lube making. One of their "famous" posters has a lube that is to die for, from what I have heard. Felix lube.
Never used it, there is just too much stuff to do to make it. Not worth the effort in my book. Not when Carnuba Red is only $1.80 a stick and I get it ready to use.

I have used Beeswax and Vasoline with or without additional paraffin. I have used Moly grease and paraffin with some Beeswax.

I have some blue lube that is just high temp grease and Beeswax, 50/50.

Some smokes worse than others BUT correct bullet fit helps to keep that to a minimum.

Thanks. That's why I asked, I have not noticed any real difference in smoke "production" regardless of what bullet or color was used.

Oh, there can be quite a difference in smoke depending upon lube type. The colors aren't what produce it though, that was my point.

I believe that there are some ingredients that by nature smoke more, such as Xlox or Alox or whatever. Some lubes may have a lot of that and hence, produce more smoke. Some less and such.

I can tell you what will make more smoke than anything when shooting a cast bullet though, fit. If you have a poorly fitting bullet with the best lube around, you are going to get smoke.

Look at this video. I am using a homecast 125gr H&G #7 with my own concoction of "Skip's Wonder Lube", HP-38 from a Sig P226. I never did get the fit that this gun needed worked out.

I even used one guy's "cure all 9mm rounds" and still had leading and smoke. Guns are individuals and fit is the most important thing in shooting lead well, period.

Wow! That was a lot of smoke. The reload after the video started looked to me less smoke than the others. That's about what I'm seeing/smelling at the indoor range I go to. If it were just me I wouldn't care as much but with others around, you don't want to choke them.

My bullets are .002" over groove diameter so, I can only believe my particular problem is the lube.

Had some issues a while back with my Outlook Express account a few weeks back and Go Daddy straightened it out and put in a storage backup of the e- mails that are processed thru Go Daddy to Outlook Express ([email protected])
The storage was only 40 MB and was full not letting in anymore E- Mails.
I called and they upped the storage to 100MB for now and tommorow I will have it upgraded to unlimited storage. That should take care of that problem.

I think the smoke was average considering how many rounds you fired. I shoot out side so it doesn't bother me unless the wind is blowing in my face. Considering how much I used to smoke in years past, I doubt it's gonna hurt me,
 
Looks like black powder loads doesn't it?

Well, we just put that on the "learning curve" excuse!

I'll tell you what though, that course was cooler than all get out!

A "target rich" environment to say the least!
