I'm an accountant for an outdoor/workwear clothing company. We rent several floors of a building in a really decent part of town. Our building has no postings whatsoever denying someone the right to CCH. Our company also has no policy on the issue, however, I can't help but feel like it wouldn't go over well if my carrying was to become common knowledge. (not that it ever should...) We've undergone a lot of expensive changes for our office, as an importer, to become C-TPAT certified. As well, I just don't want any special treatment or judgement simply because I choose to exercise my rights.

Would you carry? Would you ask for a formal policy to be formed?

Appreciate your help.

I carry. But i wear a t-shirt and jeans to work so my attire is not strict.

Over the years ive told people that i carry, not everyone. Overall most know and dont care. But again i dont work for a corporation or a big company.

If i were you I'd do it quietly

it is stated on our employee handbook that no firrearms are allowed on the property. We are not even allowed to carry them on our vehicles. Knives are also a no-no. I know of a few people that have had their carry weapon in the building. i never had my carry piece inside.

There are many states where that no guns in your vehicle policy has been outlawed and an employer can be sued for attempting to enforce it. You'll have to check on your state policy.

cclark89,

CONCEALED MEANS CONCEALED, no one has a reason to SEE or KNOW about it.

You want a company policy, the company lawyers might just give YOU one and also
"THE BOOT" bye-bye as a potential LIABILITY, being some type of a COWBOY GUN NUT.

Your IMPLIED "RIGHT TO CARRY" has yet to be FULLY CONFIRMED by the US Supreme Court.
Attorneys believe in the actions of this court, and POTENTIAL COMPANY LIABILITIES.

Moonman, although I agree that they will have a problem with it, like I said: Risking jail time is a no-go, but risking my job? No problem. I see it like this: The only way a civilian employer would ever know I had a gun is if I had to use it. And then who cares about the job?

Ultimately, you will have to decide your own policy. However, they are not going to expressly allow guns on the property due to liability issues. I would guess they've kicked it around and decided the best policy was not to preclude it, but certainly not to endorse it. Asking about it, would be a political mistake in my opinion. All you need is one HR smuck somewhere up the line to throw a fit because you even said the word gun to get you a black spot on your name in the firm.

That said, it is not expressly forbidden and you can carry certain guns like an Airweight J frame, Keltec 380, Ruger LCP etc in a front pocket and short of metal detectors, no one will ever know. I'd go with forgiveness is better than permission and never, never, never take it out of my pocket till I got home. In the event you have to defend yourself with it at work, you'll have the legal high ground, so that's not an issue in my mind. How would they know you are carrying unless you pull it out or tell someone?

You watch the news, where can you say conclusively, you'll never have to defend yourself these days? JMO.

Good points have been made here.
Appreciate your replies.

My preferred carry rig is an M&P 9c in a Comp-tac Minotaur M-TAC, (4 o'clock IWB) which, I have some trouble with when sitting. Since I'm sitting for an overwhelming majority of the day at work, I'll probably have to find something I can conceal easier/more comfortably before I even think of trying. I'd keep it in my truck, but I have a very short commute...and it really wouldn't be doing me much good in a disgruntled employee situation etc.

A .22 snubbie on me is more useful than the .44 mag sitting at home in the safe or in the truck...

I volunteer a few hours a week where I staff a cash register. Even though there is not much money I carry, but don't tell anyone. The gun is carried in deep concealment (Keltec .32 ACP) and no one will ever know unless I have to defend myself, and I probably would not shoot it out w/an armed robber unless it became readily apparent the BG was about to shoot me.

My circumstance is different than yours and I really have nothing to lose. If someone discovered my carry piece I'd just "quit" my volunteer post. After law enforcement I worked for the federal gov't and carrying was prohibited. Having too much to lose I did not carry there.

If it were me, I'd ask my direct supervisor what he/she thinks about concealed carry. There may be an informal policy, unwritten for legal reasons as stated here earlier. I think you'd get an answer though, at least maybe find out if it's frowned upon. Then you can decide if you want to risk carrying anyway and being caught, or risk not carrying and needing a gun some day.

Lost Lake,

IMHO, NO WAY should he ask his supervisor, the next thing the supervisor
will say something to someone, and next it will be like SECRETS IN WASHINGTON D.C.,
EVERYONE JUST KNOWS.

Use some common sense my good man, an unwritten policy or plan holds no real legal weight,
unfortunately the Bosses or HR's opinion holds all the cards and weight.

GOOD JOBS are hard to come by now days, if you have one don't throw it away.

If you have a DUMMY JOB, get educated and get a GOOD ONE,

Being fired or being in SOCIAL MEDIA such as Forum Comments, Facebook, Twitter, Etc.,
WILL FOLLOW YOU FOR LIFE.

You are ESTABLISHING A TRACK RECORD of life.

Employers do check and watch, even ask for your PASSWORDS
now days for NEW HIRES, NO PLAY, NO JOB PERIOD, and they really don't care about your OPINIONS.

Don't ask, don't tell. And no, I'm certainly not talking about the former military policy. You are ALWAYS better off with no one at work knowing you carry. There is absolutely no upside to anyone there knowing.

You don't ever want to be in a position of needing it and not having it because you were worried about your job. If you need it, you have it. And if you keep it concealed and don't need it, there's no problem.

Seeing as I work as a Welder/Fitter in a fabrication shop...no... Its not exactly a healthy environment for man, or machine.

However, when I cleaned windows, and we had to work in Rainer/south seattle, my boss carried a .45 with him.

If I worked somewhere that was not such a caustic environment I would probably carry at work.

I wish I could carry at the college. At least Kirkland is a nice area...

I totally agree. I've been carrying at work for 14 years. No one has noticed, or if they have they have not commented. I don't know my employer's thoughts on this subject. We have no employee manual and the subject has never come up. The risk is that if the subject does come up that he might rule against carrying on premises.

If I felt the need to CCW I would not say anything to anyone, unless they have a need to know, and why would they? I would not ask for a formal policy as the policy, most probably, would Prohibit weapons on company property.

...I've carried the past 2 days at work.

Since I'm brand new to carrying in general, I still fidget a lot, and am really conscious about making sure everything is covered...it's a little nerve racking for sure.

Hopefully this will all become more natural as I do it more.

Appreciate your replies and guidance.

I carry a 4513TSW every day. I have been at my new job for 7 weeks, find out the guys in my area are all carrying and hunt and fish and all that. Cool!!
Yesterday, we had some fun at work so my costume included a 60-10. Hey a costume is supposed to make people think you are someone different... Yesterday I was a revolver guy.
