It is my understanding that the Colt King Cobra is larger than a J frame but smaller than the K frame. The J is great for carry while the K is a bit large but a better size for shooting. It would seem the KC might be a "Goldilocks" revolver. Not too much larger than a J frame with an extra round like the K.

Anybody out there have real world experience carrying the KC? Please share your impressions. Thanks.

I've been carrying one for months now. I agree with your size comparisons. It is a really nice revolver, but I have two issues that may have me switching to another revolver. One it is not compatible with current available Safariland Speedloaders, which is the only brand I use. Two, lack of available service type grips. I just don't like the synthetic grips. These are just personal preferences and it's a great revolver. Best wishes

Had my King a year or so. You're correct about it being in between J and K frame S&W's, more along the lines of the old Colt D frame revolvers. It's an easier EDC than my S&W Model 66, and has the best out of the box trigger I've ever handled. The only drawback? It's pricey. Less than a new Python, but still a chunk of change.

If you are a bit patient and don't mind doing some looking around the Colt Police Positive Special 3rd and 4th Issue is the perfect in between size and weight. It is a bit smaller than the K-Frame, lighter weight but still uses the K-Frame speedloader. It also has a smoother trigger pull than the K-Frame.

Thanks for the responses. BSA1, I believe there was a Colt Police Positive Special for sale on the forum a week or so back. I should have jumped on that one. Is the KC build on the same frame size?

Smith J frames are excellent when you want something really small but the KC as you know gives you an extra round and is certainly more comfortable to carry. I carry it in a leather fanny pack with no issues and carry extra rounds in a speed strip.

As far as size, yes it's larger than a J frame and comes in at the same size as my Detective Special. I like the 3" so much that I added a 2" Cobra 38 and a KC Target.

I agree that the trigger in double action is outstanding and balance is perfect. I think it actually feels better than my Pythons.

Carrying the Snake is a great idea with his deadly accuracy, but a little heavy and hard to conceal.

Seriously, the quintessential Colt D frame has both the fire power of a K frame in a J frame size package. I often carry a Diamondback or one of my Detective Specials.

Some great looking Colts you have!

The Colt KC is basically a Dick Special with a longer/heavier barrel. It is incredibly well made, shoots well and I'd venture to say is about the best quality production revolver made today - along with the other Snakes being made. Aside from the fact that it is larger and heavier than a Chiefs Special, it's a great revolver for CCW.

While Colt doesn't make that much variety today, what they do make is excellent.
