I just don't get it...Free money up to $4,500 to bring an older model that must be running into the car lot...
I don't have any cars like that to get "free" money. Gee, we bail out everyone, not once, but twice in the case of the auto industry.
No wonder so many "illegals" want to get into this country, drop a few babies for citizenship (anchor babies), all these goodies at my tax expense....Give me a break and my grandchildren that will have to burden this humongous national debt....Are we nuts?

There are lots of NICE vehicles being destroyed for this program.
I have seen a few videos.
They drain the oil, put a liquid glass like compound in them, and run them at a higher RPM till the engine dies.
Wonder what THAT does for the environment.

Jim

They spent the initial $2 Billion, so Congress is in the process of authorizing more before the August break. Call your Congress Kritters and tell them how you feel.

What's the point of that exercise???????

Brian~

It is to make the motors destroy themselves so they cannot be rebuilt. So as to ensure that it will not ever be placed back in service.

I wonder how many people who cant afford a new car... are going to end up with one that cant afford.
This sounds a LOT like the issue with people who cant pay for homes getting them.

My friend got $4500 for his wife...it was a mistake but they had to honor it since they mispelled clunkers with an h...he's never been happier.

I think they should have named it "Cash for Clinkers" or "Clingon's".
Because, were you smart enough to NOT purchase something along the lines of a 6300#GVW, full time 4 wheel drive with a 7 liter displacement, incapable of running on anything except 122 Av-Gas or crushed Whale skulls, with a differential ratio so low that in first gear Steven Hawking could walk next to it, you wouldn't NEED this friggin' program, because your smart enough to survive! Another bailout for those too stupid to read the tea leaves in their own cup? We bail them out with Bawneys pwogwam for their mortgage defaults, and now we spot them to a new car at 1/4 to 1/3 off. What's next? A script for Viagra and three hours with a Vegas showgirl?
Yes folks, WE'RE the "Clinkers" or "Clingon's"! Why you might ask?
Because (yet again!) we're the dumb b*****d's paying for it!
How's that "hope & change" goin' for ya'?

even my buddy in the car biz thinks its wrong, take someone with a paid for car.......stuff em into a new one with a 500 payment........yeah thats gonna help

What's with this liter stuff? I measure engine size in cubic inches. If it's a weedeater, then you can use CC's, and real bikes are called by the type of heads they have. Why in the heck did we allow them to go to those metric designations anyway?!

I'll keep driving my 460 thank you very much. :p
If I can't get gas for it...I'll silp up the holler and get some "ethanol" from 'ol Dooley. :D
Either that, or marry an Inuit to be able to participate in a hunt. I just can't find them on the dating sites...

Oh, how I hope so!
What, pray tell, is the crime in this? I'm calling my congressmen right now in support of this. :D
(Don't tell the Mrs.!)

well automakers were not sellin cars and now the gov took em over they sold a whole bunch gee who does that benefit. also it completely defeats the purpose cause all the cars built had alot of pollution to make them and the pollution to make the new cars, well that make up for the 10 more mpgs you get. isnt recycling supposed to use something to the fullest of its life not, so not trading in a 150,000 mile car that could get 150,000 more, this program is the EXACT oppposite of recycyling and doing nothing, remember what happened when they put people in houses they couldnt afford, we are here, so now they think well we should put them in cars they cant afford! GENIUS! i wish i was that smart, these people are really getting voted for, really????????? the whole concept of this program is beyong rediculous and mentally retarted, there was no logic or common sense used but it made O.M. (obama motors) a bunch. wow

Keep in mind that the line "we sold a whole lot of cars" is propaganda, not fact. While the Gov is so screwed up they don't know how many were sold; IF and it's a big IF, they sold all they think they did, it amounts to ONE WEEK of average sales.
Ford is busy tooting its horn about the wonderfulness of CforC, Ford's sales are up 2%, boy that knocks my socks off!

The Feds have so little success with the bailouts and stimulus that even a sort of success is going to be trumpeted as the second coming, no wait, that was POTUS.

This just in from Stuart Barney: Who really benefits from the Cash for Clunkers program? First the government borrows $1 billion from China. The government disguises the funds as a stimulus for car dealers and the Big Three. The majority of individuals participating in the program have been buying new Kia's and Hyundai's. Neither of which are made or assembled in the United States. The South Korean economy is stimulated. We, our children and our children's children are stuck with paying off the loan and interest. And now our representatives are going to approve another $2 billion to be shoved into this black hole. Are you feeling stimulated yet?

Only the government would come up with a program where they pay someone to take a running vehicle and turn it into a non-running heap destined to the scrap yard. This program, in a nut shell, shows how ridiculous and idiotic out government has become.

Would not have helped me when I bought my new 2008 Chevy Impala SS in late April 2009. Only certain new cars qualify--the kinds of cars I am not interested in.

I just don't get it...Free money up to $4,500 Are we nuts?

XXXXXXXXXXXX

Well, see, now, there's a method to the madness.

Politicians ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS keep an ace up their sleeve. This Cash for Clunkers is just that.

Think about it for minute. Somebody just called cops stupid on Live World Television and the next week a group is loosing support for their first aid kit sales. So what better way to get the sheeple back in the pen than to give them $4500 of their own money?

Or is/was it their own money? Was it my share or your share that neither of us has used? What percentage of those trading in clunkers actually paided in any Fed tax(es) last year or any year for that matter? Wonder what the "demographic" on this group is.

This cash for clunkers has stimulated the banks/credit unions as well. But as mentioned above, 12 months from now will that fat girl with all the body piercings be around to repo these cars for non-payment? Wish there was a way to keep track of how many of these loans end in default.

Anyway, back to the gist of the post...........Never sell a snake oil salesman out. They can think on their feet, tell you to go to hades and make you enjoy the trip.

I also feel that some of the marginal gas guzzlers could have been cleaned up and donated to worthy and deserving groups.

Bet Japan and South Korea are smiling right now. Knowing we're gonna crush up all our old cars, smelt them down into rolls of nice clean steel and ship it over to them to make some new cars with. They'll be espcially tickled since our market will be flooded with scrap and dealers will be taking rock bottom prices to move their inventories.

Who's idea was this again?
