Cat bites can be nasty!

Now for the possible bad part, you get one free bite or clawing by a cat or dog no problem. If that animal does another bite or claw it probably will be ordered put down. (its a local law)

I can certainly understand that if your animal is running at large and attacks strangers but your cat, your property and you are the victim? Good luck enforcing that local law.

I grew up with cats. Would like to have another with my dog. A cat that is feral is just as unpleasant as a cougar, jaguar, cheetah, etc. The main difference between our house cats and the big wild ones is the amount of damage they can do. I never got infected from a cat bite, but a friend at work did, and it only took a few hours to turn into a MAJOR problem similar to a couple of the descriptions here.

My wife and I had a cat that lived roughly 20 years. She was mean. On vet called her the kitty from hell, and for good reasons. At only 8 pounds it took 3 people, welding gloves and a towel for an exam or treatment. We once we told by a boarding facility to never bring her back, and they would not get her out of the cage. They made me do it, which was not a problem. She liked us and her dogs (Rotts and Pits or crosses thereof). Not much else.

BTDT and somewhere in my archives I have pics of the scars on my arm. Found a very pretty cat under my deck many years ago. But it turned out to be feral and indeed The Cat from Hell. Attacked my cats, and me. Kept it upstairs in its own room until, after much clandestine communication and secret handshakes, I was put in touch with a local woman who had a rural property and took in such animals.

Speaking of cats from hell, are any of you fmiliar with Jackson Galaxy and his "Cats from Hell" videos? NYT did an article on him a few years ago. Hopefully this gift link still works.

Here's one of his YooToob vids:

At the risk of getting "lynched" I have to ask "what caliber is best for cats?". For a number of years we lived in the small town where I was pastor and feral cats were a non-trivial problem. They are vicious, voracious, predators by nature and I really think that "domestic cat" is an oxymoron.

I've found reality to be quite the opposite.
If a feral cat decides to turn in it's feral card and take a place alongside you, these tend to be the most grateful of companions.
They seem to be cognizant of the favor done them.

However, reality also includes unfortunate events. For these, I opt for #4 or 00 buck where no other option presents itself.
It knocks them into the other side of life like Thors hammer.

I much prefer the option of a life enriched by a former feral Norwegian forest cat trying to shove my wife out of bed.

More people die from infection following a clawing by a large cat than from the bite. Cat's claws are hollow and loaded with bacteria. Back in the day folks that messed around with big cats, Lions, leopards, tigers died of severe infections from getting deeply clawed. Usually if a big cat gets it teeth into you, you're a gonner. A friend of my wife's got bit by a cat and is now on a ventilator. I think she let the infection get away and tried to self-medicate. You need to get any infection dealt with quickly, the stuff out there today will take you out. My wife and I are currently cat less but fortunately have neighbors that own some. They know we are soft touches and visit when we are out in the yard. We call it getting our cat fix without bringing another one into the house where they play hell with her allergies. I don't have the same affinity with dogs, I like dogs...thats all.

I have 5 cats . All were dropped off as I live on a dead end road & were feral. None have ever tried to bite or scratch nor ever fought among themselves.. In fact they sleep with my dog on the same old couch.
Guess I am a cat whisper.

Get a cat or a dog bite in this county and "officials" are notified by the medical people, its a law.

My wife was playing with the cat and got clawed by accident and infection set in. Went to the walk in clinic. Next day she got a call and was told to keep the cat in the house for ten days. At the clinic my wife stated that the cat was a indoor only cat. At the end of the quarantine time the county checked in, all was OK .

Wow, all my cats, and mom's have bitten several times each, at least, and my one cat has clawed and bitten me badly about a dozen times. A couple of those were probably bad enough that I should have had stitches. I can't imagine putting even the worst of my cats down because of some local law. A cat isn't really domesticated, IMHO, it's just "tamed", and some are a lot tamer than others.

Animal mouths are filthy, bacteria laden holes. If your tongue realized how nasty your mouth is, it would leap out screaming, run and hid.
I've read that human bites are the worst in terms of causing infections.

(This thread reminds me of the notorious Pinky the Cat, of YouTube fame, who provides us all with a lesson in the folly of trying to force a cat to behave itself. Pinky The Cat (Best Quality Version) - YouTube )

Pinky is a larger, less insane version of my cat Wink. She has injured me pretty badly when she's tried to kill me. She's the one on the left:

What she did the last time she went off the deep end:

What did I do to set her off? After I scooped the litterbox out, I dumped about a pound of new litter to empty the bag, and then crumpled it up. Instant rage!! I had no pants on as I was about to get into the shower. My leg is never going to look the same again.

It seems like cats have that fight or flight response and once that switch is flipped, katie bar the door because they demonstrate super strength and aggression beyond comprehension. They all have it just some have higher thresholds than others.

We have 3 cats. All been socialized and are quite laid back, but when they hear a sound, see something etc. that they don't understand, or they interpret as a threat it's poofed fur racoon tail go time.

You scrunched up the bag. Most cats react badly to that noise. The reaction can be what happened to you, or running away at Warp 9, you never know which is coming.
