I guess what I'm asking is with a business carry, can I both open carry and conceal carry or are they different licences

Sounds like you're in NY or Mass. It's your responsibility to have the answers to these questions before deciding on a course of action. In Florida a CWP means concealed, period. Except in "prohibited places" which is my responsibility to know where they are. YMMV. Joe

Were you required to attend a certification or instructional class prior to being issued the license? These questions should have been asked and answered there.

no course required..
my question though is does everyones licence actually say ccw?mine says carry...business and target,,
nothing about open carry or concealed carry..when i go to the carry sites,,its just for NY not LI,,,regs are different here..

Mine for Kansas says concealed carry license. If you are unsure you need to get ahold of someone from your state that can give you a concrete answer. I would sugest starting at the local police station or talking to a lawyer if you have one

jgrazjgraz,
Welcome to the forum. First off, what state are you from. Secondly, you can simply google the answer to your question by typing in "(your state) gun licensing laws."

It is extremely important that you get the correct information concerning your carry permit before you go out in public toting a roscoe! If you misread the law, you may find yourself in a world of legal problems, and won't have to worry about ever carrying a weapon again. Do some research right now!

Hey jgraz,
A quick google search came up with these results. The NYPD site had this to say:

Types of Licenses

PREMISES LICENSE: IS A RESTRICTED TYPE OF LICENSE. It is issued for your RESIDENCE or BUSINESS. The Licensee may possess a handgun ONLY on the premises of the address indicated on the front of the license. Licensees may also transport their handguns and ammunition in SEPARATE LOCKED CONTAINERS, DIRECTLY to and from an authorized range, or hunting location. HANDGUNS MUST BE UNLOADED while being transported.

CARRY BUSINESS LICENSE: Is valid for the business name, address, and handguns listed on the front of the license. It is not transferable to any other person, business, occupation, or address, without the written approval of the commanding officer, license division.

LIMITED CARRY BUSINESS LICENSE: IS A RESTRICTED TYPE OF LICENSE. The licensee may only carry handguns indicated on the license in accordance with the specific limitations listed thereon. At all other times the handgun shall be safeguarded at the specific address indicated on the license and secured unloaded in a locked container.

SPECIAL CARRY LICENSE: Is valid for the business name, address and handguns listed on the front of this license, only while the licensee has in his possession a valid basic county license issued according to the provisions of article 400 of the N.Y.S. Penal law. Upon the revocation, suspension, or cancellation of the basic license, the special license is rendered void and must be immediately returned to the license division.

Another hit from yahoo answers noted this:

A license is required to possess a handgun for any purpose. The Commissioner of the New York City Police Department is the issuing authority for handgun licenses.

There are different handgun licenses with different privileges granted under each. A license for a handgun shall be issued to: (1) have and possess in a dwelling by a householder; (2) have and possess in his place of business by a merchant or storekeeper; (3) have and carry concealed for employment purposes; (4) have and carry concealed, without regard to employment or place of possession; (5) possess a target handgun; and (6) have, possess, collect and carry antique pistols.

The applicant for a handgun license must:

1. Be of "good moral character."

2. Not have been convicted of a felony or a serious offense.

3. Not have suffered from a mental illness or been hospitalized for mental illness.

4. Be a person concerning whom "no good cause exists" for the denial of the license.

To obtain a handgun license to possess in a household or place of business, or to possess a target pistol, no showing of need is required. The applicant must meet the eligibility requirements listed above. The application procedure includes fingerprinting and the submission of 2 photos of the applicant. The non-refundable application fee of all licenses is $170.00 for the first two years. Licenses may not be issued for more than 3 years and renewals are $170.00 for two years.

Only a licensed handgun owner is allowed to possess ammunition suitable for the licensed handgun and is allowed to possess an ammunition feeding device for the licensed handgun, but not to exceed 17 rounds capacity.

CARRYING-- HANDGUNS

The license to possess a handgun is a license to carry unless restricted, but almost all licenses are restricted. If there are no restrictions the licensee may carry the handgun concealed on or about his person, loaded or unloaded.

Handgun licenses issued elsewhere in New York State are not valid in New York City. New York City licenses are valid throughout New York State. However, a New York State license to carry or possess will be valid in New York City in the absence of a New York City license provided that the handguns are transported by the licensee in a locked container and the trip through New York City is continuous and uninterrupted.

A license to possess a handgun in one's household or place of business or to possess a target handgun does not authorize the licensee to carry a handgun on or about his person except in the very limited circumstances outlined above. Similarly, a target handgun license does not grant the holder the right to keep a loaded handgun in his home or place of business. To do so one must have a license to have and possess either in one's dwelling or one's place of business.

A "target" license authorizes the holder to transport his unloaded handgun to and from a shooting range or hunting field in a locked container.

An "on premises" license permits the holder to possess a handgun in his home or place of business. The holder may obtain 2 authorizations a year to transport his handgun(s); unloaded and in a locked container, to and from an authorized shooting range.

To obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun the applicant is required to show that "proper cause" exists for the issuance of the license. The decision to issue or deny this license is within the discretion of the commissioner and his decision will only be overturned by a court if it can be shown that he abused his discretion.

A license may not be transferred. The license holder must have the license in his possession while carrying a handgun, and each person licensed to possess a handgun on his premises is required to have a license on such premises. On demand of any peace officer a license must be exhibited.

Hope this helps.

I found this...Im ok just had to refresh my memory..
Business Licence: A carry licence which is`stamped "business"is issued for purposes where there is a demonstrated need for security or protection as determined by the NASSAU COUNTY PD..The licencee is restricted to carrying the firearm during normal business hrs. If a business is operating from a residence proof will be required....

So this is the category I fall in. I operate a business from my home..
but still doesn tsay if has to be concealed or not,.. Not that i want to carry it open,,I just want to know for my own knowledge

Texas - TCLEOSE

Under the 18 U.S. Code 926B (qualified law enforcement officers) and 926C (qualified retired law enforcement officers), qualified LEO's and qualified retired LEO's can legally carry anywhere in the US with few exceptions. I highly recommend a LEO or retired LEO who are qualified under the law to take advantage.

In Texas, Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education provides a process and necessary paperwork for retired Federal and out-of-state officers to obtain proof of qualification under the law. All that is necessary is to fill out the paper work and qualify at the range once a year. Here is the form Retired Federal and Out-Of-State Firearms Proficiency

Talk to your city's attorney or a firearms law attorny in your state to be sure, but odds are that you'd want to keep the gun concealed.

NY gun laws are convoluted, so seek specific legal advice from someone authorized to practice law there or your local authorities.

Here in VA, while permits say "concealed" on them, that doesn't change one's ability to carry openly, which one can do without a permit. Obviously state and local laws vary widely.
