CCW Question?

Hi . I am new here,and i got my purchase to buy permit, and also passed saftey course and got certificate,was going to go to sheriff office tomm, i was filling out background on application,addicted to alcohol,i went through treatment 13 years ago ,,what would you answer,this is in iowa,thanks

I wouldn't lie. If it's no longer a problem, then your not addicted. It doesn't ask if you ever were, does it? If it is still a problem, better rethink your decision.

I quit smoking 14 years ago, if I fill out an insurance paper that asks if I smoke, I say no. As far as I'm concerned, same thing.

Always check wording! "Are you addicted to alcohol?" Clean for 13 years answer "no".
"Are you an alcohlic?" Different story.

"ARE ..." and "WERE ..." are two very different questions, and will yield two very different responses.

So, having not had a drink for 13 years, he's not an alcoholic either. I understand the thinking around "once and alcoholic, always an alcoholic". I also understand that just one drink can put you back on the path toward alcoholism. I'm just saying that by definition, you either are addicted or you aren't. There is no middle ground and the words you put up are the same when it comes to legality.

I don't believe I was ever an alcoholic. Still, I quit drinking 25 years ago. One of the best decisions I ever made.

I too want to congratulate you on 13 years sober. It's a great feeling isn't it? You're fine to say "no" to that question. However, if you're unsure about it, just ask the issuing authority. This is not a college exam and they are not trying to trick you. Just tell them what you told us and they'll give you the straight answer.

Answer no. you are not addicted to alcohol since you do not use it. I will assume there are no official records, court, etc adjudicating you an alcoholic. Even if you had a DWI conviction, that would not be automatic denial of permits. And while you are at it, file suit against having to have a permit to buy a gun. Rights do not require permits!!!!!!

I agree. If you don't drink, you can't be an alcoholic, plain and simple. I don't agree with the theory that "once and alcoholic, always an alcoholic". I quit smoking over 16 years ago. I don't consider myself a smoker, haven't the slightest desire to ever become one again, and no one in their right mind should describe me as one either.

Telling people they are forever an alcoholics regardless what they do may only serve to weaken their resolve, never allowing that person to feel they've truly overcome the problem or allow them put it in their past for good.

It only took a week here in GA for my wife to get her permit last month. Might depend on what county you live in though. We are 100 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Its about normal in Iowa. Your not messing around with getting fingerprinted so that could speed it up some? The wait is just government BS Im assuming.
