Exactly. And substantial evidence has come out recently that police officials in DC have been cooking the books. That's why no rational person would, at this time, believe the DC crime statistics over the last couple of years.

Which officials, and how much crime data? This is not rocket science, it's arithmetic. Re-count the report submissions (since they are electronic this is a less-than-one-day task for one file clerk) and see if the public numbers are different. And discipline anyone who deliberately falsified data.

Added: And if you don't trust the police records, then check arrest data against jail records, then charging records against court records, and initial crime reports against separate 911 data by agency.

It's not just prosecutions that I am referring to. Many states have de-criminalized or reduced felonious acts to misdemeanors. Doesn't that affect your statistics?

Good question. The only crime that's accurately reported is the various homicides. It's hard to hide dead bodies. Rape, is under reported and some of those that are reported is consensual sex that an underage girl becomes worried and reports a rape leaving the boyfriends name out of it. Robbery is mostly real but the drug trade makes things, difficult. This is one frequently downgraded for stats.

Many times reports of theft and burglary are only reported for insurance purposes. Sometimes those are not reported because the victim does not want to lose their insurance. Also under reported due to police defunding. Patrol units don't have the time to take reports anymore and victim's have to make reports in person at a station house. While auto theft tends to be accurate the arrest stats have fallen. This is due to State Attorney General guidelines issued to police agencies not to pursue stolen cars as the pursuit is considered dangerous to the public. Thus, more stolen cars.

Lesson number one in the police academy is, "If it's not in writing, it didn't happen". This is really to guide officers in report writing and courtroom testimony. It's annoying to the officers when the desk driving supervisor tells them to downplay what they know really happened. It goes against their training.

The fact of the matter is many jurisdictions fudge those reports and stats to make the city look better. It helps the tax base.

I am not sure where you reside but I live near the DC Metro area and watch the local news.

There is ONE commander who has been reported to have done this. Now that may affect the stats in that area but it is not a widespread conspiracy based off what has been reported. He is being investigated and I believe on leave.

I would like someone, who is of this knowledgeable base here to tell me how do you fudge the numbers for murders? Sure you can get one wrong here and there and call it a suicide because you missed something (that has happened where I worked and was changed years later when the truth came out) but the murder rate is the murder rate. In fact for several years the media here in DC would track the number of murders each year as they came in as a news story. So it became a simple math issue. Not sure if the Washington Post is still doing that but they were just a year or two ago.

I would almost suggest it would be just as difficult to fudge the aggravated battery type charges as well. The local news is on the scene of almost every shooting reported in DC, doing a story. A major fixing of the stats would be difficult.

Now, if you get into making a burglary a criminal trespass, or what would be a robbery a theft then that could be a different story.

But let me ask you this, if these cities were going to cook the books do you honestly think crime would be as high as it is?

Not saying crime is not bad in DC. It is bad in many major cities. But scratch your head and ask yourself if it is such a crisis in DC that Mississippi and Missouri have to send troops to DC why is the numbers so high in Jackson, MS (3X of DC) and while I don't have the numbers for Kansas City and St. Louis I feel pretty certain they aren't low. **I stand corrected. As of now MO is not sending NG.** HOWEVER there are several states sending NG who have cities with higher murder numbers than DC.

As stated above don't be distracted by the shiny object in the room. DC has concealed carry permits but like many states reciprocity is not guaranteed for anyone who lives outside of those states.

Does it impact crime stats if small larcenies and low-level burglaries don't to get reported? To a tiny degree, and only in the property crime sections. Show me major burglaries and larcenies that don't get reported because of insurance costs - and if firearms or large amounts of cash or other lquid assets are stolen in burglaries (especially of occupied buildings) or larcencies and your agency isn't reporting those you have poor supervision and management. Somebody needs to start doing their job.

I note we've gone from 'the crime stats are a lie' to mumbling about petty larcenies and minor burglaries and non-pecific accusations against 'jurisdictions' without a word of support.
