Celebrities....

Chuck Norris came to the desert a few years ago. He is one of the few people I for whom I would stand in line to shake his hand. Kid Rock and Jennifer Lopez came to Germany ~12 years or so ago. Outstanding things were said about Kid Rock. (One of the Airmen of the Year award winners asked Kid Rock about how to play a riff in one of his songs, and Kid Rock had him playing on stage with him the next night.) Jennifer Lopez....she was there, too, but her reviews were quite the opposite.

I can still remember Lorne Greene complaining about US gun laws being, in his opinion, too lax. My opinion of him went way down. As far as I am concerned he can go back to Canada where he came from.

Agreed. You touch on a pet peeve of mine.

Did you ever notice an actor will make millions from action adventure movies highlighting him firing fully autommatic weapons, but returns from the set to trash the 2A.

If he hates guns, then give back the profits! If he believes firearms use influences young kids, then just make movies about fuzzy bunnies.

You take money for using weapons, then defend the right for all.

Martha Raye......

I'm sure there are many young people who have not heard of Martha Raye. But for those of you who remember the funny lady with the large mouth may end up just dropping theirs (mouth) when they read this about her. Scroll down

Don't let the sun go down without reading this about Martha Raye.

The most unforgivable oversight of TV is that her shows were not taped. This is a great story about a great woman. I was unaware of her credentials or where she is buried.

Somehow I just can't see Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, or Jessica Simpson doing what this woman (and the other USO women, including Ann Margaret & Joey Heatherton) did for our troops in past wars. Most of the old time entertainers were made of a lot sterner stuff than today's crop of activists and whiners.

The following is from an Army Aviator who takes a trip down memory lane:

"It was just before Thanksgiving '67 and we were ferrying dead and wounded from a large GRF west of Pleiku. We had run out of body bags by noon, so the Hook (CH-47 CHINOOK) was pretty rough in the back. All of a sudden, we heard a 'take-charge' woman's voice in the rear. There was the singer and actress, Martha Raye, with a SF (Special Forces) beret and jungle fatigues, with subdued markings, helping the wounded into the Chinook, and carrying the dead aboard. 'Maggie' had been visiting her SF 'heroes' out 'west'.

We took off, short of fuel, and headed to the USAF hospital pad at Pleiku. As we all started unloading our sad pax's, a 'Smart ***' USAF Captain said to Martha.... "Ms Ray, with all these dead and wounded to process, there would not be time for your show!"

To all of our surprise, she pulled on her right collar and said ....."Captain, see this eagle? I am a full 'Bird' in the US Army Reserve, and on this is a 'Caduceus' which means I am a Nurse, with a surgical specialty....now, take me to your wounded!"

He said, "Yes ma'am.... follow me."

Several times at the Army Field Hospital in Pleiku, she would 'cover' a surgical shift, giving a nurse a well-deserved break.

Martha is the only woman buried in the SF (Special Forces) cemetery at Ft Bragg.

Thanks, Sprefix. I remembered her but had no idea how extrordinary she was.

Why do people listen to these so-called celebrities? Most of the ones with the biggest mouths are in the news day after day regarding their personal lives. Most of which are a total wreck. They can't even take care of themselves, so why the hell should anybody listen to them?

Exactly on point... it's a real pet peeve of mine too. Danny Glover comes to mind as being among one of the biggest hypocrites that became rich by being in some really "shoot 'em up" movies.. Lethal Weapon, Silverado.

i don't want to high jack the thread but if i may add my own 2 cents marilyn monroe visited the Troops in korea during the war in 1951 or 1952.

Interesting Thread

I didn't know about their personal credentials at the
time. However, whilst I was in DaNang, John Wayne, Johnny
Rivers, and Ann Margaret came there. Many thousands enjoyed
their presence. At the time, We knew they wouldn't
get shot, but THEY probably didn't know.
I can't recall any anti-gun or anti-government rants from
them. Lifted our spirits by coming over from "the world".

Bob Hope always there for our guys in uniform. Hope is a national treasure. Never anyone like him. The video makes me cry every time:
Bob Hope Christmases with the troops - YouTube

This was just wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

There is an entire exhibit on Bob Hope at the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio...he was quite a guy! :)

Thanks for posting this! I didn't know all this about Martha Raye. I knew she would go and entertain but I didn't know the rest, a great lady indeed.

In 1967 attended the show put on by Bob Hope, Raquel Welch and Barbara McNair who sang Silent Night and was accompanied by the members of the 25th Inf Div in Cu Chi.

Thanks for the info on Martha Raye.

A close friend served in Vietnam (multiple tours) as a member of the 5th Special Forces
and he felt, strongly I might add, that "Maggie" Raye was, literally, one of "them."

Because of his strong feelings on this I've had nothing
but admiration for Martha Raye all of my adult life.

Bob hope did entertainment for the troops in three wars. wwii korea and he did a lot of shows for the troops in vietnam.

Hope's radio shows were often recorded while he was with the troops. They play a lot of them on XM/Sirius Radio's Old Time Radio channel. You can hear the applause and catcalls from the troops, who are obviously enjoying the show, in the background. He went out of his way to find out a little about the camp and the brass and include specific local jokes in the act. He was a class act all the way around.

I couldn't agree more. I wish every one of them who said they would had been true to their word and left the U.S. when the last president was elected. I think we would be better off. :)

Movie stars and other so-called "entertainers" are just ordinary tradesmen to me. Their personal opinions are worth no more than those of my mailman - unless they prove to be a notable exception, like Bob Hope. He always had the good sense to make fun of politicians (all of them, from what I could tell). :D

Bob Hope went out and entertained the troops even when there wasn't a war on. In 1960, I was stationed in Thule, Greenland, and he came up over Christmas and gave a show. Of course, I was OD that day and didn't get to see him.

I wish Jane Fonda would entertain all of us today by falling down a well.

Even though I had, back in the late 70's, early 80's, a bumper sticker on my truck that said,
"Boycott Jane Fonda, American Traitor Bitch" I would pay to go see her do a "well scene."

A deep well scene.........

In addition to the saying above, the bumper sticker also had a POW / MIA
logo on it so there was no doubt as to where it was coming from........

Jo Collins and other Playmates have visited the troops and have written to them and sent cookies. They've organized several efforts for that. I think they even baked the cookies.

BTW, Lorne Greene is deceased. But his fellow Canadian William Shatner and his friend Leonard Nimoy have also voiced anti-gun sentiments.

Not sure about Canadian Pam Anderson, but she mentions owning guns in her books. (These are written with the heavy assistance of a professional writer, but she apparently has strong input in them. Shatner's, "Star Trek " books are written with the "assistance" of the couple who were the Executive Writers of, "The Lost World.")

I can think of no more than a dozen Hollywood celebs who have been identified as gun owners or supporters. Most are dead now. Tom Selleck and (perhaps) Joe Mantegna are the only ones who leap to mind. Oh: Rick Jamison, but look where his career went after that private eye show with Gerald McRaney, also a gun supporter, now that I think of it.

Alas, about all of the gun supporters, save for Selleck, Jamison, and Mantegna, are "country" types. I may not have Jamison's name right. The name Parker keeps nagging at me. What was that PI show that he and McRaney were on? They played brothers. His name may be Jameson Parker? He's even written a little for gun and hunting magazines.

Jennifer O'Dell once complained good-humoredly that her, "Lost World" co-stars had guns, while she had to rely on her knives. She wanted a gun, too. Lara Cox (Finn) and her crossbow came later in the show. BTW, "Lost World" is the ONLY show in recent memory that had the heroes with guns when they weren't cops or military. The new series, "Revolution" seems uneven in how many have guns, but makes it clear that a repressive govt. would ban guns among civilians. I saw one S&W there, a Model 60 or a nickled M-36 or 37.

The above reflects my viewing habits. Can anyone else recall a recent TV show with armed good guys? I mean anything post -"Magnum" or thereabouts. Back in the '60's, we had a whole slew of Western and PI shows, but liberal Hollywood has changed that. Even then, they had anti-gun messages. The late Aaron Spelling bragged about his anti-gun slant on the original, "Beverly Hills 90210." That amused me when one character broke into another's home and the guy who lived there got a Walther PPK/S and warned the intruder that he was armed while he took cover. Did just as he should, but the intended message was that someone with a gun might shoot a friend, I guess. I forget why the homeowner (Dylan) didn't answer the door. I think he was in the shower or something. BTW, the other guy (who has since attained fame for driving race cars) is a Canadian. I know his name when I see it, not on the tip of my tongue. Jennie Garth is the only star from that show I think about much. Jen O'Dell did guest star there, though.

Overall, actors and music people are almost uniformly anti-gun, although some are more aggressive than others.

A lot of people still think she was just an anti-war activist...far from it. She was a pro-North Vietnamese supporter...big difference and she should be vilified forever for that! She came to a city council meeting I was working last month (reserve sheriff at at arms) and she spoke on some woman's rights issues. I could barely stand looking at her.

I saw the traitorous piece of human refuse at a book signing at a Costco in Seattle. No one was in line for a book......this was about 7 years ago. Man was she ugly and old.

Bob Hope was the man. I dearly miss him every Christmas. My family, which at one time was actually 4 generations strong, used to get together at my Grandfather's house and watch his Christmas special, which was usually followed by Andy Williams. I miss those days, I'm teary eyed here thinking about it. He was a great man. My Grandfather and uncles all had photos of him performing for the troops when they were serving.

We need more guys like him these days.

You can add a couple to your positive celeb list. Trace Adkins, Jessica Simpson's done quite a few shows, the Cowboy's cheerleaders, Toby Keith, John Rich and because the guy does so much, I'll mention him again, Gary Sinese.
