I am with ATT cell service. Not really bad problems other than the occasional dropped call.

However, there is an area about 100 miles south of here where I do not get ANY service. A cousin gets great service there. Nobody else I know does but he is with ATT also and has service down there.

Is there a way to increase the range of a cell phone? How can he be using the same provider I am and getting fantastic service and I cannot even get a call in or out.

Cellphone range is usually limited by tower output/reception and then the cellphone design . Some phones do better than others , for example Motorolas will tend to outpreform Samsungs . There is no real way to boost a cellphones preformance except in some case by updating the phones bios or operating system . So do not be fooled into buying some cellphone internal boosting antennea but in case you just gotta try heres a link

I have a friend who lives up at 9600 feet above Denver. He had no reliable cell service at his home. Then he bought one of the base stations for his house. Now he can talk from his house to the rest of the world. I haven't seen it, and don't know if he can move around the house, but I can call him and talk to him on the cell when I need to.

There are real antenna boosters, but they aren't cheap. They are powered devices and need either house current or 12V from a car system.

The ones I have seen and considered buying cost about $250.

I have a Motorola Tundra. Works fine in 99% of the areas I go into. Just does not work within five miles of the area I am talkiing about. Never saw a cell phone that did work around there. Nearest tower is about 12 miles away. Yet this cousin and his wife gets full signal strength in that area.

For $250 I can stay out of that area. Granted it is a remote area with not much reason to be there. The area has about 40 residents and did not get land line phone service until maybe 15 yrs ago. Even paved roads are difficult to find there.

If you don't have to be there, then it isn't worth it to you. But for those 40 folks stuck there, they might consider it a bargain.

I own a few acres there. Nothing but wooded land and pasture. No house, nothing other than an electric meter and a water pipe. Great deer hunting though. Get down there about three times a year.

My problem is when I am there, I cannot get calls. Since I am on call 24/7/365 and when a call comes in, I have to go immediately to an accident or crime scene, missing calls is not a good thing.

Every one has a life. I frequently have lunch with either politicians or police management and several dine with me with their families at supper.

People take time off. In fact, the higher up the totem pole, the more vacation and personal time they have.

There are few in the country that can do my job based on education, training and experience and be good at it. I am in demand so I have not had a vacation or time off in over 12 yrs. Went to New Mexico back in 1989 and got to the destination at 5pm in the afternoon. Got a call at 3am telling me I had to get back here. They pay me miles, time and such so I do it. Beyond that though, I have to deal with court trials, depositions and such. I have had five depos in the last three weeks and one two day court trial. Not much time left for personal time with work as it is.

In 2004, I had emergency surgery for malignant colon cancer. They operated on me on Wednesday, removed six feet of my colon and I had tubes in me but on Saturday, I walked out of the hospital to go to a scene. Someone had to drive me and I had tubes under my clothing but the work had to be done and I was the only one that could do it.

How about if you buy an ATT prepaid. Try it down there at the bad reception area. If it works there you know you need a different phone. Happily I don't know that other Hoosier, I apologize for him.

I never worry about what people say. In my line of work, you make enemies. During court trials, attorneys will try to destroy credibility and character so letting them get to me is out of the question. Had a few attys call me names on the stand and they got called down by the Judge but later they would ask me out to lunch and then we return to the name calling.

I have two different ATT phones and neither has service down there. Now I looked at the coverage areas and wonder if Verizon has a pre pay phone so I could check the coverage with one of theirs. Since one of my phones is furnished by others, I could find one with service and forward the calls to it while down there.

oldfella gave you the info you need. AT&T has very large holes in their coverage map. They claim they are trying to fix it. I had AT&T several years ago, and on a hunting trip to So Dakota I learned the entire SE 1/4 of SD has no AT&T coverage. Then I was at a gun auction 50 miles from home (In IL) and no coverage. I dumped AT&T and got a U W Cellular and haven't had a problem since. Only place I couldn't get out was in Ozark county MO, and that's because they have no cell towers in the entire county. Either Verizon or U S Cellular age your best choice.

The cemetaries are filled with people on call 24/7/365 and other indispensable people. It's good to be out of touch a couple of times a year.

I am on four meds for high blood pressure now. The stress is unblievable but it is all I know and there are few of us that do it.

If anyone needs my services, I want to do the best I can for them and not miss anything, be the client a DA, plaintiff/defense attorney or insurance company. I cannot stand the thoughts of someone going to jail for something I missed or not going to jail for something I missed. I do not want someone charged with anything if the facts are not there.

Both you and I have seen too many that says what they are paid to say just for the money and the repeat business. I am not like that but then I am poor. One guy I keep going up against has his own private jet and pilot to carry him over the US working at $725 per hour just to say what the employer wants him to say.

Call AT&T, TELL THEM ABOUT YOU'RE PROBLEM AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU A CODE TO PUT INTO YOU'RE PHONE TO PROGRAM FOR THAT AREA.
