Im looking to have my Shield's slide coated in ceramic. Im getting it as close to S&W's "Flat Dark Earth" (Vtac M&Ps) Does anybody have any feed back or comments about ceramic coating. Is it really as durable as the website says it it?
Thanks

I've never tried a ceramic coating and I'm not sure what S&W uses on the VTAC M&P. A friend of mine has a VTAC and I can tell you that finish is not very durable. It immediately started showing holster wear with minimal use. I've read that many people CeraCote their slides and seem to be happy with it but I have no idea how well they wear. In my experience the Melonite finish that S&W applies to the M&P will also show holster wear quickly depending on your holster. I have found that Kydex and synthetic holsters degrade a pistols finish quicker than a good old fashioned leather one. I therefore years ago decided to use one of Robars excellent finishes namely their NP3 electroless nickle finish which I think is the finest finish you can put on a firearm. If you do try a ceramic finish keep us posted
on how well it holds up over time.

Yeah the Vtac coating wears pretty quickly but i guess the rust prevention quality of the Vtac is excelent, event after the finish start to wear. I do like the nickle finish alot but ive seen enough guns done this way. I wanted to have the same color as the Vtac M&P's but a much more durable coating on my Shield.

Why ceramic coating? The steel already has the TOUGHEST coating / treatment you can put on a gun ~ Melonite (tennifer). The coloring is a black oxide. The ceramic coating will COLOR the slide and do nothing more to protect the steel. In act, you can always get the slide re oxided if you ever need it. Ceramics DO in fact scratch and wear. The rifle manufacturer I work for uses Cerikote. It is the best ceramic coating on the market. It IS very durable but is NOT bulletproof. It cannot be touched up. You must sand blast the old coating off & respray the finish to fix it properly. It's a gun, not a Rolex. Leave it alone unless you have $$$ to piss away. Sort of like putting 20" wheels on a pinto.

Why bother? If the finish on the M&P's is that easily worn, just buy a Glock.
Ducking and running for cover..............

I wanted a unique look for the Shield. Im not looking for a stronger finish. Im mostly looking for a "Vtac looking Shield." I have about 1,000 rounds through my Shield .40 and i love it. No problems. I just want something different.
