Chambered or not?

This post is not meant to justify one method over another. I'm curious as to the general opinion on carry with a round chambered or not. Thoughts??

Always chambered.

One may not have two hands available to rack the slide. Mr. Murphy isn't a theory, it's the LAW!

Much like a revolver, draw & pull the trigger. Common sense.

I think carrying without one in the chamber is a good way to lose a fight. And maybe my life. Things can and do happen really fast. So I carry with one in the chamber. But, because I pocket carry (with a holster) and don't want to worry about things, I carry a double action only. That works for me.

For me never chambered.
When I carry-which is often-I do so because I do not want to be in a situation where I really wished I had a weapon but none was available. To me, the risks associated with a chambered round in a carry weapon far outweigh the benefits. To get mathematical, the risk of a chambered weapon multiplied by the large amount of time the weapon is carried is significantly more than the large downside to not being able to deploy quickly multiplied by the very small chance my carry weapon will ever need to be deployed.

"The risk of a chambered weapon"!?! Follow the basic firearm safety rules and there is practically NO "risk" to carrying a chambered weapon. And if you need it, you need it NOW!

Oh, wait! Let me guess. You can politely ask the bad guy to wait for just a couple of seconds, so that you can rack your slide, and get your gun ready to actually use.

Seriously. If you are afraid to carry a semi-automatic weapon in the way that it was DESIGNED to be carried, then carry a revolver!

By that same metric you can simply leave your ammunition at home most days.

I have always felt that a firearm without a round chambered was a threat to my safety. My analogy has been, if you drive without your seat belt, will you have enough time to put it on if you are in an accident? Personally, I feel that my opinion was validated when I had the opportunity to take a force on force class at the Sig Academy. In one scenario in the shoot house, I identified the threat as I was turning a corner. The threat was no more than 3 feet away. From the time that I identified the threat to having fired two center of mass shots, time elapse was less than 3 seconds. I wouldn't have had time to chamber a round.

Don't assume you'll properly chamber a round under the stress of the moment and sensory overload.

Since I tend to carry a revolver nowadays, I guess the answer is chambered. If I carry in a holster on my belt, it will be an M1911 and it will be Condition One.

First carried on duty in 1981. Colt Combat Commander, .45 acp.

Never considered carrying a handgun anyway except having one in the chamber and ready to go.

I will say I don't carry in my pocket with anything but an old Speed Six with a bobbed hammer. I don't carry on my belt with anything that doesn't have a thumb safety.

My first post here. My personal belief is that the people asking about whether to chamber or not to chamber really are asking for someone to make their mind up for them. This is really a question you have to ask yourself about your abilities to handle a gun and your daily surroundings. Practice practice practice carrying that gun in your own house. I would turn on lights to various rooms in my house knowing they would create shadows. When I spot that shadow I draw and with a replica bb gun unloaded I react to my shadow. There's no way to win that but try that with having to rack the slide and you will see that yes. You are a dead man / woman. Might sound crazy to some but this shadow could be what's waiting around any corner you may have in front of you. To the original poster. Practice with replica gun of your choice. My personal choice for the utmost safe gun is a 1911. S&W SW1911 3"

no, unfortunately....
anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice;)

Lord you sound like my dad. You could always tell when he got his deer, that little M1 carbine would bark twice, Blamblam. Walk over and he would say he/she is piled up right over there. Yup he would shoot Does "you can cook those antlers all day long and they don't taste no better". His thinking was probably influenced by his service in WWII, Korea, and growing up during the depression.
