Changing out a hammer spring on a model 36?

Hi.. I was wondering if anybody has any tricks on reassembling the hammer spring on a model 36? It's a beast to press it down without damaging anything. I've figured out that if you use a key ring to pull the spring down then pop the cup on it helps. Then you spin the key ring off. I bet someone has a better idea though.

Hmm I tried a pin punch but had better luck with the key ring. Do you know their technique? Is it in my kuhnhausen book i wonder?

I just pushed the spring down with my fingers then stuck a straightened paper clip in the hole in the mainspring guide rod.

Ahh.. my early 70s gun is "pre hole". Now I'm jealous. At least its pinned.

Why not simply cock the hammer to compress the spring?

I believe the hole is there . . . just not turned so you can see it. If it's the older style hammer strut with the ball socket, rotate the strut until the hole is visible.

That works when removing the spring/guide rod assembly from the gun. The original question was reassembling the hammer spring.
