I would like to know if anyone ever changed the fixed factory rear sight to a fully asjustable sight on their S&W 1911 45 auto - 108282.
If yes, what sight was used? who makes it? where can I buy it?. Knowing that I would be hard pressed to find one that just drops into the factory dovetail cut, what modifications did you have to make to make it fit?. Also, did you have to change the front sight as well to make it work? Any information regarding this change would be much appreciated.
Thank you all in advance.
ps; photos would be great.

Check Brownell's catalog or MidwayUSA for a direct replacement adjustable rear sight. Bomar makes an excellent adjustable rear sight but the slide has to be correctly machined for it to fit.

Do you have a competent gunsmith near you? Ask which adjustable sight they would suggest and how much would the machine work cost? The good part is that you only need to ship the bare slide to have an adjustable installed if machine work is needed. A cheap adjustable rear sight or poor machine work will just cause more aggravation.

It might be cost effective to trade your present 1911 for one with an adjustable rear sight.

The S&W sights are based on a Novack design, and Novack makes direct replacements with dots, tritium cells, with or without adjustability. Remove the sights to the right, taking care to keep the firing pin lock from launching. It's retained by the rear sight. As usual, you'll need a 65 deg dovetail file to adjust the replacement sight to fit halfway by finger pressure. That makes it easy to reinstall the firing pin block too. Replace from the right.
