Taurus PT809. They gave it to me as a warranty replacement for another gun I paid $199 for at Academy. There was nothing wrong with the one I turned in but it was part of the infamous "settlement".

Caliber is 9mm. 18 round magazine. Came as shown. I've run 5000 rounds through it including steel and aluminum case ammo, lead bullet reloads, hollow points. Never a failure. I did 500 rounds of Tula steel case without cleaning it. Even now I see them on gunbroker for less than $250.

It's not a classy refined piece of machinery, but it runs and if one needs an inexpensive defensive weapon it more than fills the bill. It's not exactly my favorite weapon. I'm saving it. Somebody is going to need it someday.

Cue the "Taurus are junk" posts...but you won't hear that from me. They can have problems like everything else, and can also be good like everything else. Their lousy reputation and frequent Model changes keep the prices down.

Kel Tec P-11 and the P-32. Best pistols I ever had and longest running. Two diamonds in the rough!

Probably saved yourself a lot of headache that you didn't buy one. In 1994, the Treasury Department issued a finding that the Striker-12 and Streetsweeper shotguns did not have a sporting purpose. Since they have bore diameters over .50 inch (as do all 12ga and 20ga shotguns), this redefined them as Destructive Devices under the NFA. As such, existing ones had to be registered with the ATF, and sale of one today requires a $200 tax stamp and the standard NFA transfer process.

Yes, good explanation! I had a gun shop at the time and traded it to another dealer before the date. (Benson caused us many problems back then)

Of course, there is always the Hi-Point. Pictured is my one and only. It is a Haskell. I have had it for years and bought it as a LE Trade-In. I suspect it was a confiscation.

I have never had it fail me, and it could serve as a boat anchor if need be.

When I think "Cheap but Reliable", a Ruger Wrangler comes to mind. Also, old High Standard Double Nines and such.

When I look at the statistics of crime and gangs, etc, I see a lot of them are using High Points. Cheap, yeah. 100% reliable, OK. Nevertheless, I wouldn't have one in my gun safe. Call me an SOB. OK, I accept that.

If I see a news report that a criminal carried out his crime with a stolen S&W, it makes me think that at least he didn't do a shill purchase.

WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH ALL THESE ZOMBIE THREADS LATELY???

What’s wrong with zombie threads as long as there are pictures? :D

Here are my “cheap and reliable” guns:

Factory custom RIA 1911 Government matte nickel (free)
Factory custom RIA 1911 CCO 9mm/22TCM (free)

Being a cop I would say cheap guns are popular in the poor communities. Not reliable either but what happens the criminal burglarizes their neighbor who got for an example, a High Point and poor people do not own a Gun Safe.

Occasionally a criminal will be carrying a premium handgun with fancy boutique ammunition because they burglarize a home in a well to do neighborhood and that Gun Owner has a $3000 pistol but not a Gun Safe or they left it in their glovebox.

I like seeing old threads come back to life at times, as often I miss them the first time around.

I think my favorite "cheap but reliable" of all times for me has been my old faithful Ruger P89. I bought it way back when they first came out (within the first couple of years anyway). Years later my step-dad was looking for a bargain 9mm to keep around the house so I sold it to him with about 300 9mm reloads.

A few years ago he passed away and it came back to me, still in great condition. It's still as clean and reliable as ever, and they are still very affordable. It's my current truck gun.

I bought this S/A 1911 and a 4" Model 65 for $600 back when trades were common at the Orlando show. Sold the 65 for $350 so I'm in it right at $250. I shoot it maybe 4X/yr so 250-400 rds yr for 11 yrs (pic says I took it in 2013, I think it's older). 5K rds or so since I bought it, 100% reliable except for a short time I installed a "full length recoil rod assembly" and It needed help going into battery if'n it wasn't "wet" enough. Went back to original configuration and 100% reliability. It should be good for zombies too. Joe

How about inexpensive and reliable?

Glocks are available, affordable, reliable and accurate. There are a plethora of custom parts, sights and holsters available for the various models. Many parts interchange between models. It is possible to find a gently used Glock for a reasonable price.

I have no experience with the High Point pistols, beyond being able to recognize one when I see it. However, I have read that that they are dependable enough as bullet launchers if that is your sole requirement.

The Tisas 1911, I think it's a 1911 A1 US Army or some such is about the most reliable cheap gun I have. I've never snubbed my nose at any surplus imports, either. My 3 Berettas run like clocks. About $500 +/- in the 3 of them. I bought a new shotgun for cheap today. We'll see about that one.

I had a High Point that shot anything but it did finally work the rear
"Plastic sight" loose , and it needed a new sight to fix the problem.

Did you know that they are made in the USA ? !!

Hush, they are an embarrassment to the major manufacturer associations.

Geoff
Who is not embarrassed about it at all. Neither do I own one.

Sometimes firearms are just tools. I don't particularly need or want a 98% N Frame if all I'm doing is carrying a firearm around the property for pest control or for a handgun that is just riding in the camper. H&R and IJ out sold Colt and S&W most years of the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The Kel Tec P-32 is one of those guns that everyone should have in there collection. It just does what it does so well and its a lot of fun plinking cans with it on the range. The quality of the gun is very good too. Its also nice that it didnt cost much to own.
