I am a Scotch guy. As long as it is not too peaty, I like all of them. The subtle differences keep me trying all kinds. However, I only have Social Security for income. Gotta watch them dollars.
In the 1.75 bottles, Old Smuggler ($19.50
otd) and Famous Grouse ($31.00 otd) are my preferred. Clan MacGregor ($17.00 otd) when I want something light.
Any suggestions boys? I basically keep an under $30.00 before tax budget!

Wellll, I have a dim recollection from over 50 years ago when I ran out of scotch at the bar, getting some compliments on a concoction of grain alky, watered to estimated proof, colored with stale Pepsi, with a couple drops of iodine for flavor. YMMV

Single Malt or Blend?

If a blend and you have a Costco membership they have some good (Kirkland) stuff for short money. Unfortunately, this year there is no "Kirkland" single malt being offered.

If you have a "Total Wine and More" in your area, the lower priced Grangestone Single Malts are good. I know that there is one in Northwest Austin, but don't have any idea if you're anywhere near there.

Grouse and MacGregor are certainly reasonable for the money.

Oh, I forgot to mention the absolute worst Scotch I've ever had. "Skrewball Peanut Butter Scotch." It tastes like peanuts and caramel. Which is not a bad combination in a candy bar, but is horrible in a Scotch.

My brother drinks Johnny Walker.

Mine is a lot better and I never had a hangover but have not touched it in 20 years.

The little lady does not like me to drink it or Whiskey.

A local Brigadier General gifted me a bottle of scotch snagged while leaving the jungle. I thought boy this is something special, a 45 year old bottle of Scotch.......never having developed a taste, it still tasted like ****!

Duggan's Dew half gallon is less than $25. It is a Highland blend.

I am alternating between Famous Grouse and Dewars for an everyday scotch. I do keep a Balvenie Sherry Cask aged for special occasions.

I spent a LOT of money one summer in the bars here at the Lakes trying to acquire a taste for Scotch. Didn't happen.

I know nothing of current prices but late hubby said Scoresby was good "cheap" Scotch.

Life is too short to drink cheap Scotch.

Agreed, and I might add: Life is too short to drink cheap Scotch or expensive wine.

I truly enjoy single malt Scotch or small batch Bourbon. When it comes to wine, though, I'm happy with a decent $7 bottle of Cabernet. For me, wine is a beverage with a meal, but whisky is for savoring in its own right.

I'm a coffee snob too! I roast green coffee beans myself. This habit has ruined me for any other coffee.

If I'm drinking Scotch Whisky on the cheap my preferred dram is Monkey Shoulder. It is a vetted malt Scotch not what is normally referred to as a blended Scotch like Dewars and Johnny Walker. Vatted malts do not have any grain whiskys added but are blended from just single malt whiskys.

Monkey Shoulder is a mix of three Speyside Distilleries:Glenfiddich, The Balvenie, and Kininvie. I would say the main component is The Balvenie.

It is a buy in th $30-35 price range.

I was joking a bit back a ways..At one time I would drink almost any hard likker...even scotch. There were some i just couldn't stomach though.. Had some real high end Napoleon Brandy once that did try to retreat. Just that when I went to work in the fire dept I saw wayyy too much caused by drinking. So...I pretty much quit completely. Just too much pain, misery and suffering connected to it and drugs.

Have you tried Teacher's? I haven't looked for it in years, but it's probably still imported and still a good whiskey..

I found it one of the best relatively inexpensive Scotches when I bought an occasional bottle when Chivas or The Glenlivet seemed a little high at the moment. But I don't drink so much whiskey that price matters to me as much as it does to some.

I've liked variety, within limits. The Glenlivet is probably my favorite, with Chivas Regal, Dewar's, and Ballantine's 12 Year Old being other favorites. Haig's Pinch is also very good.

I DO NOT like Johnny Walker, Cutty Sark, J&B, and similar Scotches. I feel sure they account for many people disliking Scotch.
