I grew up in Chicago and paid too much for the CPD marked Hand ejector at today's gun show in Tucson.

I'll post some pics with Photobucket.

Date of Birth anyone?

Anyone from Chicago know who owned badge 455 back in the 30's?

And does anyone have any idea what the faded stamp to the right of the SS# is? New to me...

I'll let someone else help you with the date because the SCSW says ...
1915 - 1942........241704 - 700000. Some of the guys here can narrow it down for you.
That's the kind of gun we wish could talk. Congrats on getting it.

Early to mid 1920s I would guess. I think the stocks are correct so likely original.

The 455 isn't necessarily a badge number. In fact I doubt it is. It's probably a "rack number" to ID the gun within the department. As for tracking an individual officer from 80 years ago, lol. Few if any departments have the records that far back, and they won't share them if they do. I have a cop gun from the late 1950s with the deputy's full name penciled on the underside of a stock panel. I contacted the county S.O. and they had nothing. No records to search even with the full name. How far you going to get with just a badge number?

Cool old wheel gun and I imagine Chicago politics kept many cop guns from private hands.

Unless you are sure the gun came from Chicago PD, you might want to get a letter, lots of City names that start with "C", that bought Smiths.

That SN would put it as being from 1924, and the grip style would verify that date. I can offer no assistance on the police markings. A typical M&P in that condition from that era would probably sell for $350-375. There are some collectors who specialize in cop-marked guns who might be willing to pay more. I'm not one of them, so I would pay no premium for the marking.

Very interesting revolver! :)

Have you considered any options other than Chicago? Chicago PD officers had a long tradition of having the agency name spelled out and the officer's name etched onto the sideplate of the revolver aftermarket. I have one from the 50's w/ these markings done in a circle around the S&W logo. I believe that the department required officers to purchase their own guns in the same fashion as NYPD. So, a factory marking is not very likely. Please keep us posted.

Either way,you have a VERY nice early PD marked M&P!

Feel free to PM me.....

Charles

P.S.,
I just took a closer look at the last pic. That "CPD" inside a circle was Cleveland OH PDs logo.
