I just picked up a Chief Model 60 from a friend and was wondering if anyone knew how to verify the production date from the serial number and what all the different markings mean. My new 60 is Serial #AWC94xx and I believe it was manufactured some time around 1987. Does that sound right? Its in great shape with the original grips, as well as 2 other sets, came with 3 or 4 holsters, some speed loaders, and about 300 rounds. Approx what is it worth?

Thanks

Yes, a Chief's Special whose serial number starts with AWC would be a 1987 revolver

The average good, clean stainless J-frame is worth $400 - $600 depending on accessories and completeness of the package (box, papers, etc.)

Great, thank you Colt. Yeah, she's in great shape with the original box and papers and all the other accessories I mentioned including the original grips.

I presume there's an S and W book which outlines all of this, which is the best one to pick up?

The grips, holsters, and 300 rounds of ammo are worth a couple hundred $ by themselves. Your very clean-looking M60 alone is worth somewhere between $400 and $550.

Thats great!

I picked it all up for $450 plus my NICS check. The pic shows the pachmayer grips. It came with the original box, the original grips, plus another wood grip, the ammo, three different holsters, and some speed loaders. Tonight is Range Night.

The rubber grips in the pics of your 60 are the same ones I use at the range on my 442. It makes shooting it a pleasure, but the wood magnas and TGrip go back on for EDC.
