You either do or don't. A pizza joint by me is owned by two brothers who like Belgian Ales. Very expensive by the case, I can buy an occasional treat by the bottle. Tonight I did. A Grande Reserve Trappist. I called my son and promised to share it with him. 9% alcohol, those monks know how to brew!:D

Wonderful stuff. I fell for it when I in Brussels for two weeks back in '93.

A little story:

I was in Brussels on a two week assignment for my employer at the time, Texaco Inc. I had discovered Chimay Grande Reserve early in my visit. At the time, I was 6"4" tall and 260 lbs and three regular beers over an hour didn't do much to me. However, after two Chimays, well I was thankful I did not have to drive.

Anyway, One night I was waiting in the hotel's bar for a co-worker to come down so we could head out to dinner. My co-worker was 6'6" and about 230 lbs, a big guy. We would be walking to and from dinner, so I told my co-worker, "Let's have a couple of beers." I said nothing about the alcoholic content being 9%. About halfway into the second Chimay, he had this funny look on his face. I said, "What's the matter, are you okay?" He responded, "Gee, I'm feeling these beers. I've never had a problem with a couple of beers. Maybe, I'm coming down with something." I began laughing and then shared the joke with him. After that, we'd limited ourselves to one before going to dinner. ;)

It's lovely! I haven't had a Chimay since I got married and that was sixteen years ago. As I recall, it was $8-$10 a bottle then.

No wonder the Monks don't talk much.:o

Yes please.:D
The only beer that strong worth drinking.
To bad it's so expensive

Never tried a Westvleteren trappist? That's the one beer wich is hard to get in Belgium itself. We have Chimay all the time, and it isn't expensive at all. However, after five, I better have a meal or I'll be worthless during the rest of the day ...
