Yep, my little icebox in my bedroom had a freezer full of solid ice so I grabbed my mason chisel and a hammer. Got a bucket full of ice and reached the back of the freezer when I heard a hiss.

Oh well, I had that box close to 20 years. Time for a new one which I got. :p

I killed one the same way but with an M16 bayonet.

Its been 25 years but I am still reminded of it on a regular basis.

I used to fix appliances and this was a common service call. I had to tell people it wasn't worth the money to repair them either. I had one guy stick his gum over the hole. I have to admit it did hold some of the charge but not for long.
Your best bet is to unplug and let nature take it's course. Using a hair dryer used to drive moisture into the fiberglass insulation and cause problems later but since they use foam now probably not a problem.
