choosing a smith and wesson revolver for a private detective

Make it a model 36 with 3" barrel. Holster in a Berns-Martin Triple draw holster. This make the afficianodos take note.

Iggy:
Was that Model 12 2" Nickeled once carried by a female Deputy Sheriff?
Jimmy

She carried a nickel model 10. I've really got to watch her or I might lose this one.:)

She glommed onto my Mdl 36 and only gave it back when she bought a 642.

I had to get her a Seecamp to get mine back..

It's horrible having a wife that likes guns, Horrible I tell you!!!

A nickel-plated Model 49 Bodyguard J-frame would be perfect for a person confined to a wheelchair, with humped-up, no-snag surfaces that wouldn't bind as easy on his/her clothing while seated.

The Bodyguard would also be able to be thumb-cocked should a wheelchair-bound retired detective sometimes have trouble gripping the little gun well for double action use.

A classic J-frame indeed!!! Make it a pre-67 model with "Diamond" stocks and a square cylinder latch for a classic look!!!

My second choice would be a nickel-plated Model 36 J-frame, diamond/square latch of that same era.

Please, no danged stainless guns!!! Make it nickel to add a touch of class!!!

Tom

Is the detective is an ex LEO? What era? A 19-2 snubbie or a 357 Combat magnum (PRE 19) may be his weapon of choice. To me the "romantic" description 357 Combat Magnum adds ominous tones in references to the weapon. It also suggests power.

For reality one might research how much hanky a wheel chair bound person can commit. Match the injury to capability desired. It may be he needs a 8 3/8th inch 44 mag to keep law and order.

Iggy, beautiful revolver, it suggests hanky and panky by it's self. You need to snap a few pics of it on silk pillows etc.... I know what you mean by wive's who take up shooting, hunting and guns, my wife outright stole, without remorse, my custom Pre 64 Model 70 Win for her deer rifle, my (I mean her) Bearcat, my (hers) Nickel 19-3 and won't give them back. She did the same thing with my (hers) heart. I'm gonna put my foot down and buy me a snubbie 19. Yes sir, foot down, anyone have any good ideas on the best method to sneak guns in the house?

Depends on the era.
I'm a Private Investigator and when I carry a revolver, which is often, it's a Centennial as a BUG, usually my 340PD in the non-dominant side pocket holster. As a primary, I often carry a 4 screw 2" M12 (when I'm feeling nostalgic), or my 2 1/2" M66.
I've carried several others but these are the ones I use most. If your character is set in the Sam Spade days of the '40s, maybe a 2" M&P.

classic snub

S&W M36 2" snub would be a great choice. Another good choice, not mentioned, would be a S&W Model 10 with a 2" barrel.

Depends on whether he wants to be able to hit across a room....or across a parking lot. Not many can hit across a parking lot with a snubbie, especially under pressure.

In my mind you don't sacrifice much in concealment, but gain a whole lot in effectiveness from a 3" barrel.

This a a Model 36 (no-dash) with a Tyler grip adapter and a period Bucheimer holster.

Definitely a 2", if not the model 36, then a model 10 or 12, oh and definitely blued with magnas and a black Tyler T. :D

Are you kidding? There is no other gun for a Private Eye then a 2in Model 36:D
