I love me some 3rd Gens! I especially like the single stack concealed carry guns they brought to market. I've been waiting a long time to have my hands on one of these here Scandium frame AirLites. I've come across a few for well over my price point and turned away, not knowing what the future would hold. Well I was able to grab one, and for well below my number, which makes it all the more satisfying.

The 4040PD is the only Scandium 3rd Gen semi-auto ever produced . That's pretty cool. Not only that, but it's a .40 S&W crammed into a 9mm frame! I don't quite understand how, but the magazines, grips, frame widths are seemingly identical to the 3913. It has the swept angle dustcover featured on the 39xxNL and 39xxLS models. The gun cost way too much to manufacture, and Glock was cranking out cheaper plastic guns at the time. So, it was relegated to 3rd Gen history shortly after it appeared on the market in 2003 as far as I know. I wish they would've just gotten around to making a few more scandium models, because that sure would've been neat, but this is the only one.

I put these SWEET 3913 grips on, which one of the forum members graciously sold to me. What a guy!

I've been looking for awhile, and along the way I picked some magazines (to hold boolits, and to read also). I was thankfully well prepared for this day when I finally acquired the gun lol. Magazines can be hard to find, but I scored all of these for cheap... in case you hadn't noticed, .40 is out of vogue these days. Ammo has gotten cheap too

Snapped this frame pic while changing the grips from the factory Hogues

The magazines themselves are unique to this gun only, with this fancy ball-bearing that must be for more than just looks. According to the literature that came with, its function is positioning the follower

One thing to note, the Scandium alloy frame does tend to wear easily from what I've read, and seen myself on these guns. Most of the ones I came across for sale had some significant wear on the frames. This one is so nice, but still I can see where the barrel is taking some metal off the rails, and yet this gun wasn't fired all that much, judging by its appearance.

One thing I'm not sure about, is whether or not all of these came with the revered spring-loaded decocker lever I've only read about. Sadly, this one does not have that feature. However, I checked and the slide was cut for it! Can anyone tell me more about this?

As I've mentioned before, I'm a ways off from my prime collecting years, being in my mid-thirties, but I've now acquired two of the 3rd Gen models I feel like HAD to have. There's a few more I am hunting for yet. I'm sort of picky, and I don't have a lot of money to sink into these guns. Anyways the hunt is fun for me and I'm very patient. Here's the two 3rd gens that I have in my "collection" which have the original box and papers, besides my other 3rd Gen carry gun
3913TSW Non-Railed, and the 4040PD

I should have my butt kicked for selling off the one I owned. I happen to like the 40 S&W round, in most guns. Did not care for the Glock 27 I bought some 20 years ago however. Looks like you scored a nice one. Great little guns. Handsome too. Congratulations!

I never like the 40 in any plastic guns I've fired either. I've read that this gun is a soft shooter, and I really feel blessed to have one. Right now it's a buyers market for these, since they don't get a lot of action when they go to auction. I don't know how many are left out there, but people like me who are acquiring these now will never sell them.

Not a .40 fan myself ....... so had to look it up

From the SCS&W 4th Ed.

4040PD made 2003-2006 retail was $840.......... used; in 2016 "ANIB $575"

LOL weight 25.6 oz vs 25 for the 3913/14NL guns

Regular 4014 ( only 500 made) was 27oz

Thanks! Out of curiosity, do you know how many of the 4040 were produced?

Here is the 9mm 3913TSW Pre-Rail weight (23.9 ounces) vs the .40 4040PD weight (24.5 ounces), unloaded

Thanks for showing a very cool and underrated gun.

The wooden grips add some class. Do you know who made them?

They're made by KSD, but beware I've seen mixed reviews on them on this forum. These ones are beautiful, and have only some wear on the checkering. A very nice forum member sold these to me, for which I will be grateful every time I look at or carry this gun

Mercs - I'm glad you were finally able to land a 4040pd at the price point you were looking for. I still don't think I'm ever going to part with mine ;) Please give us a range report asap, I bet she is a sweet shooter.

@malph - These grips are made overseas by a company named KSD. The company still makes wood stocks for Smith autos but came under some heat a while back for using the Smith logo, as seen on Mercs gun. I don't believe you can order them anymore in this configuration but there are still other more "vanilla" options to choose from. I just recently purchased another pair of CS45/CS40 grips with no logos, just factory style scaling, and I'm waiting for them to ship now.

Thank you so much! Now having mine in hand, I must say that we are both winners in the end. Things sometimes have a way of working out for the best when we stick to our gut, as it did for us both in this case. This gun is a relic, and we should count ourselves as blessed to own them. I can't wait to shoot mine, and will report back on it as soon as I can.
