I love me some 3rd Gens! I especially like the single stack concealed carry guns they brought to market. I've been waiting a long time to have my hands on one of these here Scandium frame AirLites. I've come across a few for well over my price point and turned away, not knowing what the future would hold. Well I was able to grab one, and for well below my number, which makes it all the more satisfying.
The 4040PD is the only Scandium 3rd Gen semi-auto ever produced . That's pretty cool. Not only that, but it's a .40 S&W crammed into a 9mm frame! I don't quite understand how, but the magazines, grips, frame widths are seemingly identical to the 3913. It has the swept angle dustcover featured on the 39xxNL and 39xxLS models. The gun cost way too much to manufacture, and Glock was cranking out cheaper plastic guns at the time. So, it was relegated to 3rd Gen history shortly after it appeared on the market in 2003 as far as I know. I wish they would've just gotten around to making a few more scandium models, because that sure would've been neat, but this is the only one.
I put these SWEET 3913 grips on, which one of the forum members graciously sold to me. What a guy!
I've been looking for awhile, and along the way I picked some magazines (to hold boolits, and to read also). I was thankfully well prepared for this day when I finally acquired the gun lol. Magazines can be hard to find, but I scored all of these for cheap... in case you hadn't noticed, .40 is out of vogue these days. Ammo has gotten cheap too
Snapped this frame pic while changing the grips from the factory Hogues
The magazines themselves are unique to this gun only, with this fancy ball-bearing that must be for more than just looks. According to the literature that came with, its function is positioning the follower
One thing to note, the Scandium alloy frame does tend to wear easily from what I've read, and seen myself on these guns. Most of the ones I came across for sale had some significant wear on the frames. This one is so nice, but still I can see where the barrel is taking some metal off the rails, and yet this gun wasn't fired all that much, judging by its appearance.
One thing I'm not sure about, is whether or not all of these came with the revered spring-loaded decocker lever I've only read about. Sadly, this one does not have that feature. However, I checked and the slide was cut for it! Can anyone tell me more about this?
As I've mentioned before, I'm a ways off from my prime collecting years, being in my mid-thirties, but I've now acquired two of the 3rd Gen models I feel like HAD to have. There's a few more I am hunting for yet. I'm sort of picky, and I don't have a lot of money to sink into these guns. Anyways the hunt is fun for me and I'm very patient. Here's the two 3rd gens that I have in my "collection" which have the original box and papers, besides my other 3rd Gen carry gun
3913TSW Non-Railed, and the 4040PD
