Here we go again. According to the good old AP, the St. Louis church shooter had an arsenal in his bedroom - "The arsenal in accused gunman's Terry Sedlacek's room included two 12-ga shotguns, a rifle and a box of 550 .22-caliber bullets, according to court documents filed Tuesday." Any shooting of innocents by disturbed individuals is a tragedy but why must the press always try to scare the general public with exaggerated reports?

550 .22-caliber bullets! Why would anyone need so many? Did you know that .22 is the most common caliber used in U.S. shooting deaths? That guy might have killed 550 people! There is no legitimate need for an individual to possess such deadly firepower. Not to mention 12-gauge shotguns. Do you know how loud those are?

Once again they can't even get the terminology right, forget the ridiculous gross exaggeration about the "significant" amount of weapons and ammunition . . .

an arsenal is where the weapons are manufactured and an armory is where they are stored. Sorry to be picky, but words do mean things. And when we, as shooters and collectors, misuse words ( even though we understand what someone is talking about) we are responsible for mis-educating those who don't know any better.

Beat me to the post, greg. Saw it on a news site and knew folks here would get a charge outta it.

Be safe.

550 rounds of .22LR huh?

Sounds like he went to Wally World and bought a box of the cheap Federal plinking ammo.

Heck, I bet I have a box or two around myself somewhere . . . I just can't find 'em for trippin over guns and falling on my arse-N-al.

T.

I'll make the argument that "arsenal" is defined as "a collection of weapons" - so by the dictionary, yes, this was an arsenal. We all have arsenals. The word has been demonized to mean something it doesn't.

Someone better tell Springfield Armory

Springfield Armory did both; manufacturing the arms and then storing them. As did its sister facility at Harpers Ferry.

Wow, are we getting picky over words these days. I wonder if he had a clip to put in his 22 caliber gun.

And remember we are talking about media reporting, they never have let the proper language and facts get in their way of a story biased the way they want it or just plain stupid!

Yellow journalism comes to mind, and if they are finally shown to be wrong a retraction on page 98 in small print makes everything all right!

For the good of the children, saints be praised that he didn't have an evil, "shoulder thing that goes up"...what's it called...oh yeah, a BARREL SHROUD.

Anybody remember the interview with that sheep-ette?

Idle minds, or was that American idol, and explosive devices are the devil's workshop!

The love of money, to buy guns n ammo, is the root of all evil.

My musings and a thin dime will not buy you a cup of java...

Almost forgot, an arsenal in the hand is a grenade that's worth two RPGs in the bush...

Carolyn McCarthy; D-NY

Another luminary from the Sarah Brady school of self-advancement by tragedy.

Dang, I need to get another shotgun. Or does a 20 gauge count?

From the Merriam Webster online dictionary:

Main Entry: ar·se·nal
Pronunciation: \?ärs-n?l, ?är-s?-\
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian arsenale, ultimately from Arabic d?r s?in??a house of manufacture
Date: 1555
1 a: an establishment for the manufacture or storage of arms and military equipment b: a collection of weapons
2: store , repertoire <the team's arsenal of veteran players>

Main Entry: ar·mory
Pronunciation: \?ärm-r?, ?är-m?-\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural ar·mor·ies
Date: 14th century
1 a: a supply of arms for defense or attack b: a collection of available resources
2: a place where arms and military equipment are stored ; especially : one used for training reserve military personnel
3: a place where arms are manufactured

So Arsenal is one of those Ayrab terrorist words, huh? Interesting.

Well, I've got both manufacturing and storage going on, so I'm set. Even if my 3x5 foot manufacturing table now has a grow light hanging off the back of it, and drip irrigation supplies sitting on it, it's still an arsenal. Or is that an armory?
