Once again, it's cider pressing time here at the ol' homestead. For this first batch, only one granddaughter was on hand to help out. Thirteen-year old Addie helped pick apples....

Grind 'em up...

And squeeze it all into cider.

This first pressing of cider was a combination of Honey Golds for the body, Pixie Crunch for sweetness, MacIntosh and Cortland for tartness. Turned out pretty good.

I'll be pressing another batch towards the end of next week...primarily Fuji and Empire apples.

We put a lot of it in the freezer, give some to family and neighbors, and then Ms. Judy puts the rest up in gallon jars and processes it.

Until then...here's a toast to all on the Forum wishing you good health and best wishes.:)

Nice pics as usual. During Halloween, Ruthie will fill a crockpot with apple juice, maple syrup, butter, nutmeg and allspice. Tastes great and makes the house smell good.

Rusty, my wife does something similar (not sure of all the ingredients). I love the smell that goes all over the house and it tastes good......smells and tastes of autumn. :)

Cider

You folks, bring back, fond memories, of our cider making days.
We had a cider/wine press, a bit larger than the one you show, an apple shredder, and several apple trees, on our home site. Our fruit trees, press, and shredder are gone, but the memories remain.
Our press and shredder, was made in Ohio. It was owned, and used, by my paternal family, for many years. I inherited it from my uncle. We, then, used it for many years.
We, imbibed, lots of hard cider, pressed out by that press, and enjoyed it's delightful kicapoo. Nevertheless, I can truthfully say; "Never in my lifetime, have I had a hangover".
My ancestors maintained a large apple orchard, and every Fall, they harvested, wagon loads of apples, and processed, them into many barrels of cider, They enjoyed, aged, and sold it, They then made 'Apple Jack Brandy' from a few barrels of that hard cider. If you haven't savored that delightful beverage, you have a great treat in store for you.
It is, indeed, that time of the year.

When I was pre-kindergarten aged, my grand pap Snowden and his 7 kids (one was Mom) and most of us young'ns would make apple butter. Everyone went home with a few jars. He never pressed apple cider, but there were many places that we could get it. I still like apple butter this time of year. I need to take a ride over to Beaver County to get a couple jars at my favorite apple orchard.

I used to see an apple butter making exhibit at the Kutztown Folk Festival. It was kind of interesting to see how old time technology could still work.

You brought back another fond memory; 'apple butter'. I remember those diligent ladies, patiently, stirring apple cider, all day, in brass kettles, boiling over a bonfire' to produce apple butter.

Folks, I certainly appreciate all the comments, but have to make just a slight correction....Daisy is Faulkner's dog. Suzy is ours. Still...their both border collies, both brilliant, both great personalities, and both great companions. Just thought I'd better clarify.:)
