Clamp-on gas block?

Is there any issue with the gas block front sight being at the wrong height? Or does it match the height of the stock sight on the rail?

It is well within tolerances of adjustment do you can sight the rifle in correctly with the stock rear iron sights.

Sounds like I might have to put a kit together.

Contact me if you need any measurements on the sight base. I looked for quite a while before deciding on the armalite sight base AS THE BEST SOLUTION. It looked like armalite had ceased production of that sight. I called them and they told me they hadn't fine a production rub in a while and it wouldn't be anytime soon either. So, I put the idea to rest for a bit. Then, I got the itch again and started searching........and their was the sight.....INSTOCK !!!

race car chassis shops would have dom or chromoly tubing , but not likely thin wall .750" tubing! that's too small for race cars.

I picked it up a local metal supply shop. DOM stands for "drawn over mandrel" so the tubing is seamless! that's important for a nice fit on the barrel. also, the DOM tubing is nice and polished on the inside from the drawing process. (looks like a skeet barrel for a shotgun.)

I would think it wouldn't matter as your shims are either going to be a two piece (two halves) or a whole with a slight cut up it to allow compression when clamping.

BTW, I have a quad pictanny gas block that arrive yesterday for my 15-22. I have some heavy wall and thin DOM scrap kicking around from my last bike frame build and plan on making some shims this weekend.

WOW! that looks really good! I'd like to see the gun completely assembled. Man I used to really like the rails on the 15-22, but for some reason seeing your mod with the front post and M4 hand guard makes it look all the more like an AR. Nice job, I might just have to follow suit...

Painterly,

Here ya go!

Man, I am really liking the 15-22 with the different hand guards!

@Quadcam: How is that Magpul pistol grip treating you? I've seen some deals on ebay but have been hesitant. I am also considering a grip with finger impressions, but I like the extra storage and the beaver tail that the Magpul's offer...

I like the stock grip better, but this was pretty cheap for a color matching grip. It was only $15. I prefer the hogue grip the most of all though, but a ghillie green hogue is about $35. This is my son's rifle, so this is what he wants. He like the storage compartment that the stock grip doesn't have.

The Hogue grip is great. I've got a FDE MOE grip and four or five A2 grips in a box doing nothing because they have all been replaced by Hogue grips. I went with the MVG instead of the RVG on my 15-22.

.......... and like magic, the mailman delivered the MVG right after I posted the previous message.

now, here's a pic with the MVG (moe vertical grip.)

This thread has wandered far from where I originally started it, BUT, thanks to QuadCam, I was able to solve my problem. Not to mention that we got to see his awesome rifle pics.

Anyway, here's mine. I used QuadCam's DOM tubing method to install a YHM single rail gas block, with YHM's gas block riser. As desired, that combination brought the front sight mounting height flush with the rail height.

This problem originally started because using a shooting sling with the 15-22 was wildly changing the point of impact. I wanted to free-float the handguard and mount the front sight on the barrel to alleviate this as best I could. As a bonus, I really like how it looks. I think the gas block adds aesthetic balance to the rifle, as well as making it a bit more muzzle-heavy and giving a little longer sight radius.

And the Troy fixed sights are awesome. As you may notice, I had to radius the clamp blocks on the riser to accommodate the front sight.
