hello all;
what type of solvents are the best to use for cleaning the cylinder face free of powder...something that will not damage the bluing on the 1960-1970 era smiths...thanks to all...

I apply Kroil or "Ed's Red" liberally, and let soak overnight. Brush vigorously with an M-16 cleaning brush.

Do NOT use a "lead remover" cloth.

I get it clean. Not trying to make it "new". It will just get dirty again.

birchwood casey makes a lead away cloth that will remove the carbon...this is for stainless revolvers...i wouldn't use it on a blued gun as being to rough with it can remove bluing

I second the lead away cloth for stainless guns. Put a thin strip over a popsicle stick and rub away the rings. Works awsome.
Not for use on blue though.

I use MPro7 and a bronze brush from Brownells. It cleans the carbon right off of stainless guns and cleans blue guns without much damage to the gun. Actually, I just get the lead off the face and and leave the carbon rings. The bronze brush will eventually wear on the bluing, but I have an old 586 with AAA serial number that I bought new that has been scrubbed a lot and still looks pretty good. Heavy use and cleaning will eventually show use.

The best and safest method to clean a blued cylinder face or any other blued part is to use the Metal Care Cloth sold my Pro SHot. The cloth is pink and has a cleaner that does not harm blued finishes but will remove powder anywhere. I have used it for years on many of my blued revolvers.
