I use one on all my ARs for cleaning. Mine takes the place of the bolt and locks into the lugs. Most AR shooters I know use them. Cheap protection for an expensive barrel. They also make them to insert at the muzzle end to protect the crown.

Why would anyone ever even attempt to clean the barrel of an AR from the muzzle???

Well, having no experience with ARs, never fired one, or cleaned one - I'm getting an education, thank you.

All bench rest shooters with any salt use them. Not only do they help prevent wear in the chamber throat, they also help protect the action from getting some of the caustic copper solvents down in it.

FWIW you should also get yourself a one piece stainless cleaning rod. Any other material (aluminum, nylon coated, etc) can potential pick up particles of copper and become abrasive.
