close seconds

Hey Guys and Gals,
Have been reading the F4 thread and it reminded me of a little known fact. At the time the F4 was the fastest 0mph on the ground to 10,000 ft aircraft, what was second?
To get things rolling I will give you the answer to this one. It was the Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane.
I know y'all know some more of those close seconds that many of us don't know about. So let's learn something today.

Mike, What is the predominate pie in Alaska? I know up north in the lower there are Rubarb and Mincemeat that I have never seen any of here in the south. "round here it's pecan, sweetpotato, lemon, chocolate, etc.

My favorite pie is blackberry, probably followed by pineapple.

Does the chopped & channeled '34 Ford I was pit man at Bonneville in 1952 count? OOps, we were in 6th place. LOL. Turned 142.51 MPH in the flying mile. Fastest time was 157 MPH set by a GMC 6 gun.

Texas Star, This was at the time the F4 was top dog. You might also realize that the Sikorsky test pilots did some stuff that was a little risky. Who in their right mind would have put an HH-53 Super Jolly Green Giant into loops and rolls on purpose? Those guy did. IIRC a first. When I was at Sikorsky in 70-71 they had some pretty amazing footage of tests they had done. Also remember this would be an on the ground side by side "go" comparison.

Seems to me I saw the still photo's of the " Skin "of a HH-53 wrinkled during a Loop..

I was in the back of HU-2k Seasprite at the time..

Second place is nothing more than the first place looser.

Somewhere around here I have a trophy for first place in the Tres Banditos match which is a side match shot around here at the state metallic silhouette championships. At the 300 meter line there are placed 2 pigs, 2 turkeys and one chicken. As many three man teams as will fit on the line come to the line and there is a sudden death shoot off. All shooting is done offhand. The first team to knock down all five animals is declared the match winner and the second team to do so is awarded first place as everyone knows there are no second place winners in a gun fight. This is one of my favorite trophy's.
