Not much seems to be known about the Cloyce / Cascade grip company. On paper, I have only a brief review of Cascade grips by Dave Hart in the 1977 Guns & Ammo Annual, and I remember small ads in 1960’s and 70’s gun magazines. Others have reported that former Herrett’s employee Cloyce Edwards started his own company, also in Twin Falls, Idaho. Sometime around 1976, the company name was changed to Cascade.

Our friend Linde found a Cloyce grip catalog and brochure from 1965 - going by the postmark on the envelope.

Please post pictures of your Cloyce grips, hints on how to identify them, and add what you know about the history of the company.

One notable feature is the "double checkering pattern" touted in the catalog.

HINTS ON CHECKERING
We have checkering in different sizes to improve your shooting and add distinction to the appearance of the stocks. Our standard 16-line checkering is put on the stocks at no extra charge and is a very sharp and comfortable checkering. Smaller checkering is more desirable for the heavier caliber guns. Our double checkering pattern design (two separate checkering patterns on the stock), is very satisfactory on target, police and detective stocks. …. $2.50 extra

Our stocks have a genuine handrubbed oil finish which may easily be refinished if they become scuffed simply by sanding with fine sandpaper very lightly and then apply a coat of any oil base stock finish, and then hand rub finish.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO ORDER
EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT HANDED STOCKS
1. Take a clean sheet of paper.
2. List our name and address legibly.
3. List the make, model and caliber of your gun.
4. On the same sheet of paper, place your shooting hand palm down, with all fingers together. Extend the thumb toward the body as far as feels natural, with just the weight of your hand and arm on the sheet of paper. Take a sharp pencil, or have someone do it for you, and holding the pencil vertically, trace completely around your hand and fingers.
5. Leaving your hand in tracing position, extend trigger finger away from other fingers, and trace trigger finger again. Raise forearm vertically (press harder), and retrace fleshy part of hand, and also behind palm and thumb, showing distinctly the heel of the hand.

I'm ... borrowing ... two quotes from one of Linde's threads. More please.

My guess would be Cloyce, who worked for or otherwise had something to do with Herrett's back in the good old days. The ribbon is sort of a Cloyce trademark of sorts. See this photo of Cloyce stocks forum member gdogs originally posted here: http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-ha...k-collecting-junkies-unite.html#post136758382

Another set of Cloyce stocks:

A very fancy set Bill Cross has can be seen here: http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-ha...ho-made-these-roper-ish-grips.html#post832245

.... All of my Cloyce grips have a clearly defined "U" shaped border around the checkering, .....
.... all of mine have an additional hole drilled in the top of the inletting - possibly to fit a jig?

===

SG-688 speaking now:
I have a pair of what I've guessed to be mid-70's Herrett's Shooting Stars - but they have that "additional hole" at the top of the inletting.

I found a set of Cloyce "Mountie" grips last year but they were too big for my hand so I let them go to someone who collects grips. Neat design and checkering, just too large for my midget hands.

Begging for more pictures.......

One subtle hint for identifying Cloyce grips: A few previously posted here have displayed a small "Cloyce" medallion in the manner of S&W factory grips.

Another slightly odd observation. Cloyce used the term "stocks" as one might expect from a former Herrett's employee, yet Cascade was "Cascade Custom Grips."

They look like a great stock, let's hear from some owners.

Surely someone here has a Cloyce made set of stocks.

I think I have a set to add here:

Right hand palm swell:

I thought Herrett's at first, but after seeing some pictures here and comparing them to my others I think probably Cloyce:

And then there is this:

They feel really good in the hand. Between the right hand palm swell and how this crazy carving sort of follows my hand, letting my long thumb curl around the little stub of a thumbrest.

Anyone ever seen such a thing?

Edit:

I'm not certain these are Cloyce any more, so I'll add my other 2 sets and the backs of all 3:

Interesting!

If I had seen that catalog, and a name was nowhere on it, my first guess would have been Herrets!

again....

Thanks to a forum member , Dmr50, I found a thumbrest target set of Cloyce to add to my collection. Stripped, work in progress to refurbish
The relationship with Steve Herrett is evident

Here is a set of Custom Police RB K frame on a 3” Model 19. This is a whole lot of rare.
