Took my 1954 vintage Combat Masterpiece out to get a little range time and the cylinder latch won't release the cylinder. The cylinder turns fine, will operate in SA and DA modes with no problems. But that cylinder will not swing out. I tapped on the latch release and the cylinder itself, but it will not open. It looks like the cylinder is forward too far as the b/c gap is non-existent. Open to any suggestions. Thanks.

My problem with identical symptoms-I had to take off side plate, take out cylinder release and cleaned it up. It was all gummed up from sitting for years. Possible the ejector rod has come unscrewed a little instead.

Hal:

Is the thumb latch in the normal position at rest and have you tried to push the locking bolt (on the barrel & contacts the extractor rod end) toward the muzzle to release the rod?

First check for that situation is the ejector rod has backed out. Slide a business card between cylinder and cylinder stop and turn the cylinder while holding your thumb on the knurled tip of he ejector rod. Remember it has left hand threads. You should be able to righten it up enough to open the cylinder.

Take out the front sideplate screw. These are fitted to the crane hinge. If it got mixed up with the center sideplate screw, it could be binding the hinge. Often times trading places with them can fix a problem.

Actually a 1954 K frame would have right hand threads. The chance to left hand threads was in 1960. But, as it has an exposed rod he should be able to tighten it up pretty easily. If necessary slide a business card under the cylinder so it holds the cylinder stop down. Grip the cylinder and turn it backward while holding the tip of the rod. Once it opens stick some fired bras in 2 or 3 chambers and pad the tip of the rod with leather and grip with pliers or a vise and tighten it up. I tighten a drill chuck on the rod then grip the chuck and the cylinder to tighten the rod myself. Don't get all carried away just slightly hard tight.
