My first Women's Softball team was terrible (1st half A league 0-12, 2nd half D league 7-5), and we struggled mightily in the first half. Just got murdered every game. We were o-7, set to play the Bombers, and my best (and only good) player wasn't there. We really stunk and were getting no-hit (hard to do in SLOW-Pitch Softball), and at the end of the 3rd inning we were down 19 to 0. The umpire called me over and said, ''We play 7 innings, I really don't think you are coming back, and I have two more games to ump tonight. I can't end the game, the other coach can't, only you can.'' Me, being the superior strategist said, ''We are the home team, I want to score, and one of my starters hasn't hit yet. So let's play one more inning.'' Welllll, they really started to kill us, and we could not make a play. The Bombers hit wrong handed, some ran backwards and we just wilted. They scored 25 runs in that inning!!! The final score was 44 to nothing, and we were NO-HIT in SLOW-Pitch Softball.
But that wasn't the worst thing. Three of my ladies were sisters, one a sister-in-law, and my 16 year-old asst. coach was the baby brother. During the Looooong 4th inning, a 'fan' started swearing, and totally trashing my team. The legendary 'insult to injury'. I was fuming, and said to my young asst, ''I wish I knew who that *** was, I'd kick his ***!'' He looked up to me and with a pained expression on his face said, ''That's my father.''

I coached a Pony League team for several years. We were 1-15 one year. We "won" the last game of the season, but only because the other team didn't bother to show up, so we "won" on a forfeit.

But we went from losing 25-0 to losing the last game played 8-7. That other team, one of the top teams, was really sweating because they didn't want to be the only team to lose to us that year.

Great bunch of kids and we had fun every game, and they really learned a lot. So did I.

I've played on some bad teams, but sheesh your team was terrible. I would have called that game at 19-0. There's, "Sure we're losing, but we're having fun..." and then there's just humiliating.

I was officiating youth football and one game stands out. You see there was one coach who was really amazing. He was good with the kids and a brilliant strategist as well. He was so good, the other coaches all got together and told him that if he won another game by more than 35 points, they'd kick him out of the league.

In this particular game they were up by 30 or so points and the running back has the ball and an empty field in front of him. He looks at the coach, standing right next to me, and asks what to do because if he scores, the coach gets kicked out. The coach told him to run out of bounds, which he did. The coach on the other team came unglued. I guess he felt like the winning team was just taunting them. It was a terrible situation and nothing the good coach could do.

Defective whistle

Back in 81', I was coaching my 4th grade YMCA Basketball team, and playing against the best team. We were getting pummeled, and the ref made no calls for fouls or violations through the middle of the 4th quarter. They were huge, he would not call 3 seconds, and they were camping out in the lane. The play kept getting rougher, and I spoke to him at the end of each quarter, trying to get him to control the game. With a couple minutes left my center was knocked to the floor, his head hit the floor so hard I (and the crowd) heard it hit. The ref' and I were leaning over him and his whistle hung down between us. I asked him if I could see it. He gave me a funny look but handed to me, and I blew it, LOUD. He asked me what I was doing and I said; ''I just wanted to see if it worked!'' To my surprise he did not call a 'T' on me, but did call us for several fouls and violations after that. It was the only time I wanted to have a technical foul called on me.
